I really appreciate everyone's input, you guys are wonderfully intelligent.

My marriage is new, preceded by a five ...

I have found that many people who pride themselves on their blunt straight talk ("I don't hedge, flower things up or pussyfoot?") often see the offended responses they receive as being the other person's over sensitivity. In your case, is it really ONLY your husband who ever takes offense?

If I don't like your hair cut I could say "I think I prefer you with longer hair. It's more becoming". Or I could say "Yuck! That's a terrible haircut!" Which would you prefer to hear? They both convey disapproval of the new look. Do you really see choosing your words carefully so as not to give offense as "pussyfooting"? To me, it's just a matter of practicality and good manners.
