I wasn't part of the jock/cheerleader/popular group either--in fact, I was really quite shy in those days.
Something changed along the way--not sure what or when but there sure were a lot of butterflies that emerged late from cocoons. Maybe it took being away from all of the others to realize that we, too, had confidence and capablities below the surface.

we didnt have a lot of choice in our high school. it was essentially divided up between the heads and the jocks. so, do sports, do drugs, or do nothing. everyone else was kind of invisible.
the lunch tables were all segregated too. i ate alone a lot of the time! kind of uncomfortable!
i went to the 20 year reunion. the dorky invisible kids had become power lawyers and bankers. one friend of mine, who was really dumb in school, was really wealthy! apparently he wasnt so dumb about real estate investments!
i try to tell my daughter that high school and what its like there has very little bearing on the rest of life. big fish in small ponds often become some other kind of creature all together once they hit the big ocean of life.
