Emmy Awards: Colorless and Censored

I watched the Emmys (against my better judgment). I watched, not to see "who are you were wearing", or even to see who won, but to see the recap of the year in TV. I was disappointed. As an event, it failed. As entertainment it missed the opportunity. As a spotlight on the best in TV, it was off the mark.

It was a smart move to downplay Ryan Seacrest as much as possible. And, though I can't imagine they'll ask him back again next year, he wasnt terrible. I really wanted to hate him, call for him to be run out of town, see "Hollywood" rue the day they ever gave him the podium, but really, he wasn't the worst thing about the show.

Okay, somebody probably thought he'd bring in the younger crowd, but then why didn't they create/produce a younger show? And, I must say, the most annoying thing was the censoring of even the slightest indiscretion or non-PC comment. (Did you think there were technical difficulties a couple of times when you were looking at the disco ball? Nope, that was the sensors cutting away from Sally Field dissing the war (!!) and Katherine Heigl, saying the S word...

Is it too much to ask that the show that salutes the best in TV might actually inspire viewer-ship?

Okay, as for the winners, there were no real surprises or upsets for me. Even though mainstream press is reporting that the Sopranos was the big winner, I think Tony Bennett and Robert Duvall got more screen/stage time and 'love' than anyone else. And, I'm okay with that...

Like you, I wasn't excited about the show at all... and I still hate Ryan Seacrest (what was up with the Tudor outfit? didn't get that gag at all). But I have to say, I really enjoyed the Emmys this year. Could it have been better? Yes! But a couple of weeks ago MTV held their Video Music Awards (you might have heard about Britney's sad appearance?) and THAT show was truly horrendous. Unwatchable. So this show was FANTASTIC by comparison. The best thing I can say is that it was predictable... it didn't try to manufacture fake "excitement" with A.D.D. camera angles and quick cuts to parties that weren't even happening at the show (which is what happened at the VMAs). My favorite moments of the night:

- Best reunion moment: The cast of Roots

- Best musical number: Jersey Boys were terrific (but talk about a forced association to have them salute Sopranos. that was just odd)

- Best speech: Katherine Heigl. Loved that she said her mom told her she didn't have a chance.

- Funniest presenters: Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert giving away Ricky Gervais's award to their buddy Steve Carell

- Most unexpected gag: Rain Wilson going head to head with Kanye West in a "do you know the lyrics" contest... of Kanye's own music. Yeah, it look totally staged, but it was funny and a great surprise.

And even though James Spader (also hilarious) said his seats were the worst ever, I liked the "theater in the round" thing. I thought it was funny to be able to see the stars squirming or looking bored in their seats.

And back to Seacrest... I just read that this Emmys had the lowest number of viewers ever. So at least he won't be back next year! woo hoo

Sadly, the critics were farily forgiving.... they didn't really blame or credit him for anything... so, he may continue his odd rise in the ranks.

I think we should run a 'who should host the Emmys' contest and submit it to the producers of the show for next year. Though, we won't be able to start the process until about June, since so many 'stars' are made overnight :-) And, I hope the Emmy committee is looking for a whole new team/company to create/produce the show next year...

BTW, what about that odd Current TV bit and the ovation to Gore, didn't THAT feel contrived?

And, for one more look at the dignity and grace that is Seacrest:
