I live in a rural area in new england and rabies seems to be cyclical, meaning that it seems to be a problem every few years. I know a lot of people who don't vaccinate their pets and there a lot of feral cats in the area. People need to realize that rabies is 100% fatal to anyone who gets it. If you suspect you have been bitten, treatment must begin immediately before the onset of symptoms or the person will die. This is why I believe it should be mandatory to vaccinate.

I am not crazy about the use of vaccinations, but this one I think is in everyone's best interest. I would say yes, we should make it mandatory. I have a dog and while he rarely goes out without me, the chance we are walking in the woods and a rabid animal comes, he would have no trouble trying to protect me. Losing him would be worse then the fee of any shot.
dodger, I am sorry you had to shoot the raccoon, I understand it must have been difficult, even under the circumstances, but you did what needed to be done.
