I think the role of great leader are those who have the capability to change an organizational environment without crisis, provide new realities, are proactive, demonstrate great people skills, work in a collaborative effort (cross functional), and empower their employee's, is a visionary.

It is sad to say that it is sometimes necessary for a leader to use crisis to activate the culture within the organization to change. Even if that means creating a false crisis.
The gist of the matter is that the leader must take whatever steps necessary = down sizing - ramping up - lock downs to position and orient the organization within the core value frame he or she represents. The next reality is that the leader must be held accountable by some body - like the board or electorate for the actions adopted.
The leader must dare all but must be accountable for all he or she dares.

Interesting observation Oldude59.
I think I'll create a new discussion for leadership and crises. I have several thoughts on it, and a couple of examples straight from the headlines.
I can think of nothing that can more quickly define a leader than crises.

Hi all,
I may enjoy this group. I am in a masters program that specializes in leadership and management right now. I am finding that my thought process of listening and empowering employees is not what the average person in school believes in. Of course, I think I am older than most and experience and maturity has a lot to do with my thought process.
Mentor to most is to teach ....... my comment to the group was that to truly mentor is to inspire without trying and not to just teach knowledge to staff. To inspire, I believe you have to have a good skill of listening and empowering from the bottom up. Somehow, I think when employees feel important and heard, even some of their ideas implemented in the whole of the work force, the whole tone of the workforce changes in your facility. With happy employees, come much better productivity.

To mentor is to support... teaching might come into it at times but it's all in the delivery (or lack of it.)
Listening and empowering, positively influencing yep all of that and more... No wonder there are too few great leaders, most people would look at this list/s and say "too hard!" then walk away, the great leader would look and then say, "yeah... and..." :) It's all about the finer distinctions and how they are implemented.
The big thing for me is that leaders LOVE people... they know they can do more, be more and have more... with ease.

Managers are appointed, leaders just "are". All leaders have some things in common:
Leaders inspire the people around...
This is well worth hanging up.
