About fifteen years ago on this date i was sitting in front of the roaring fire with my mentor, Dr. Alexander P. Hixon, Jr. ( Philosophy & World Religion, 1976, Columbia University ) just off the beach at Malibu CA.
At that moment he had twelve books in print. We were discussing just this subject. He and no few of his peers such as Peter Matthiessen ( The Snow Leopard ) were well aware of the plight of the writer in contemporary society. Lex really wanted to do something meaningful about it, but due to the circumstances of his life, simply did not have the time, nor was it his personal style. Instead, he charged me with the task. this was one of those moments which would literally change my life forever.
The task as we discussed it that beautiful fall morning was to assess the emerging internet and examine it's value as a tool to build community in such a way as to create livelihood, As he put it, "Right Livelihood" and in a manner that was consistent with our innate values, morals, and ethics without the compromise inherent in todays marketplace.
The secondary goal was to do all this in a manner that would interconnect, strengthen and empower, if you will, the isolated.
Even from that vantage point we were aware of the potential of the emerging tools. HTML, Audio, and Video coming into the hands, if not the masses, the emerging multitudes.
We can now write books, magazines, widely distributed manuscripts & articles, streaming audio and video- Virtually all of the old school media to which we have previously been exposed but we can produce it ourselves. We are no longer dependent on that which others have heretofore proffered.
The first step however is the building of fully functional or viable community. To not only gather together but to gather together for a purpose and produce.
[ To Be Continued ]
I'm sorry. That's not very concise. It's been a rather rough morning. Aside from that, This was never intended to be the expression of any single individual, rather it was intended to express the views and feelings, the passion if you will, of the community.

It's not new but I do recommend...
EXECUTION, the art of getting things done!
Actually to be fair, I recommend the first half of the book as it is about 50% bigger than it needed to be.
That said, good relevant and insightful stuff through page 90.

(Gordon - couldn't we have a new thread "business books" and then sub off that?)

Yes Dave, I've read it and reread it, put parts of it to work right away and am slowly integrating other aspects. Its not the best read ever (there are lots of business books that are more fun and inspiring) but its is one practical effective approach to "getting things done".
I highly recommend it, with the caveat that most of us won't be able change all those habits all at once. its a journey worth taking on though.

I've had the good fortune to attend a couple of David Allen GTD seminars where I work. I came to the first presentation a skeptic, and then, not to sound cliche, within minutes I knew this was something unusual. It changed my life, saved my job, etc. Wonderfully basic concepts, yet revolutionary to people like me who have to have these ideas retold.

Read Sales Dogs it a great insight to what type of seller you are, I think to sell well you run a business you need to know yourself and what you are. I am a golden retriever. i want to take care of my clients. i was more inspired by this cd than by the Zig Ziglar and George Foreman seminar I went to. I think networking helps if you work it right. It takes usually 8 times meeting with some one before a sale is signed. I found that once I meet someone at a networking advent I will keep running into that person off and on this give me a chance to get to know them and them me to start a social friendship so they become familiar with me also.
