Zen, one moment we're butting heads and the next we agree.
If I don't take my son to see this it will be a long summer. Girls don't care, they are like me---this looks stupid!!!!!!--that's my 6 year daughter...
God I wish I didn't have to, but we're going Saturday. Hopefully, not too early to include the flask! His was talking about it this morning before going to school. Which reminded me of the flask.
He said 'don't worry Dad, you'll like it too!'
I said 'if u like it I'll like it'. Why not lie to the kid? He still believes in Santa for pete's sake. Sheesh.
It'll be fun! Watch your kids laugh with glee! LOL!!
I'm not going to this one. Looked too cartoon-ish for me. But if I had a little boy, I would! My nephews are ranting! There will be 6 of them going together. I'd hate to be in the car ride home!!!
I can wait for you guys to review it!
Personally, I'm going to see The Fall Saturday. Looks very interesting.
E, would you do the honors of starting the discussion on that movie? (the Fall, not Speed Racer: sorry!)
It's in limited release. I actually have to drive 20mi to see it. I'm planning on seeing this Wednesday, and really want to know if it's as good as the critics are saying or if it's too campy.
All the reviews I read were unfavorable (including a number by folks who were fans of the original). i believe the word :sucks" appeared in several of them.
Well, without sounding like the majority--the movie blew chucks faster than the Dole Pineapple plant! (that one was for you E!)
I could hardly enjoy my nap because this flick was louder than Iron Man. My son thought it was cool (especially the fight scene, which you'll see when you rent this sucker). Slow down, speed up, pause, it was like watching someone play a video game.
It was too long--my son liked it ok, but kept squirming in his seat.Too herky-jerky, the colors were too loud--and that friggin' monkey and kid--if I could have reached through that screen...this movie, and I really mean this, felt weird. Like it was all done on the computer. Christina Ricci even looked like she was peel off a page of a comic strip.
On one hand I'm surprised. Yep, I said it. This disaster was mistakingly done by the creators of the Matrix and 'V' for Vendetta' (which wasn't so bad).
The move was over done, too much CGI and absolutely no storyline.
The bloated length is one of several reasons why Speed Racer ISN'T ideal for children.
A complicated plot involving a corrupt team owner (Roger Allam) fixing races to drive up stock prices will shoot over the head of any kid who doesn't subscribe to The Wall Street Journal.
Aside from Rex's fiery death -- which is followed by Speedy's emotional breakdown -- the "family film" shows scenes of drivers being fed to piranhas, shot at by mobsters, and thrown from moving vehicles. The PG rating isn't suspect; it's laughable.
And I haven't even mentioned the overacting of Paulie Litt as Speed's brother Spritle, or the presence of his poop-throwing monkey Chim Chim or Chum Chum-- who cares?
This was all I could take. I left my sons and nephew in the theater and went outside only to see a ton of parents outside smoking, pissing and moaning about the movie. As each parent come out, they were greeted with either laughter or clapping.
You're encounter sounded like more fun than mine. That was really bad. I eyes bled, my hearing fading, I think I'm getting some gray...the aging process was in full effect.

I am going to see this because my son was howling last night when he saw the previews.
I never watched that cartoon, because I despise Japanese animation.
Then and now.
I don't have to like it as long as my son does. So, I'm going (with a flask in tow.)

Ha!
I'm with you Zen. If it weren't for my sons I wouldn't be going either.
Better invest in a flask!

I may not go see this, but I have to confess I LOVED the cartoon as a kid. Racer X was the coolest thing on wheels (excuse the pun).

I don't mind the gas if it's worth it.

Good luck with this one.

I'm definitely not going for myself. This is strictly for the kids. Well, my son. Daughters say it looks too stupid.
Most of the parents here don't want to go. Including me.
As long as he's ok with it, I'm cool. Going today to get it over with.
Might as well bring something with to ease my pain.

Weird, stupid, but funny...outside too.

I'm so sorry guys. I know what you went through.
I didn't go to see Speed Racer, but there were people who were so ticked off, it convinced me not to go see it.
I knew you guys didn't have a choice <ugh>. Your reviews were honest and hilarious! If it's any consolation, hope the kids enjoyed it!

Zen, Max: sorry--but I can imagine you guys sitting there squirming-especially u Zen! LOL!!!
Max-you did the right thing by just leaving the theater for a few minutes, I heard it was over 2hrs!!!!!
I'm not going. Period. My son is old enough to not only go himself, but take his little brother with him!
I'm still recovering from the flu-type whatever the hell it is...

Richard Roeper actually liked SR. But he said he also like the cartoon as a child.
Posted: May 14, 08 1:02pm
Man nothing beats the original Siskel & Ebert.
This Roeper dude takes quads or something. Never seen a critic take a movie so personally...
LOL!!!!
