I need help with finding work. However I am faced with a few obstacles. I have a spinal condition which precludes me from doing jobs that require a lot of heavy lifting. After my initial diagnosis from my doctor and the lifting restrictions he imposed I have been out of work. I can't get on disability because they don't feel I am disabled enough for that. I have been out of work since 2004. I am faced with having to go back to work now and my problem is I have not got any recent work history to wrote into a job application. I had a friend of mine who is in the social service field tell me that my girl friend with whom I live with would have to act as an employer and help me with job references. Is this person correct? How do I get around this problem and yet still become gainfully employed again? Most employers are doing background checks now as well and if you have something unfavorable on your background check you are just out of luck and still out of work.

Your case presents some difficulty because employers are terrified of driving their insurance costs up so high that they can't provide insurance for the remainder of their employees. I would suggest you register with several good temporary agencies with the goal of getting long term temporary assignments (three to six months). Often these temporary assignments become permanent once you have proven yourself as reliable and indispensable.

I have done Temp to Hire work many times and all too often the job assignment ends long before any permanent position is ever offered. I have found that Temp Agencies do not want to allow you to get a permanent position in a company because if you do they lose money from it. Most Temp Agencies here in my home state expect too much of their temp employees as far as reliability and dependability. If you can't make it to a job they don't want you at all. They do not even care to hear your reasonings why you can't get to an assignment. Many Temp Agencies will hire you and give you assignments despite certain obstacles that may stand in your way. However many companies today do all kinds of background checks on individuals for work. If you come back unfavorable you are out of a job. If you have for example a criminal record you can't and won't get any consideration even with an explanation. If you have a bad credit history as well many potential employers will not hire you either. If you have certain health issues which prevent you from doing things like heavy lifting an employer won't hire you because they do not wont the risk at all.

I am currently driving & delivering pizzas. The pay is good with the tips.
It is part time and I live and work in a safe community. This is a good job. I am looking to add more work to help with my income.
Have you tried part time work or are you looking for full time only? Some part time jobs are stepping stones to the full time work.

Two simple questions,WynonaRose.
While you were unemployed, is there something that you were doing or could have been doing at home to keep you busy, even if you did not really consider it employment? What skills were involved?
Now, is there something you could start doing at home or from home which would confirm that you have some (or all) of the skills which your target job demands?
Maybe, you could start with an inventory on the first and the second above and surprise yourself. What do you think?

Also, I found that volunteer work can lead to jobs. Is there a business that you want to work at that is not hiring now, however, you might be able to volunteer there? Just a thought......

Your wrote... "Most Temp Agencies here in my home state expect too much of their temp employees as far as reliability and dependability."
Well, YES, that is totally understandable, and why would you think otherwise?.
And... "If you can't make it to a job they don't want you at all. They do not even care to hear your reasonings why you can't get to an assignment."
You were hired assuming you would be there to do the job when you are needed, to be otherwise, I'd have no interest hiring you either.
I don't mean to be harsh or unkind, but I suggest you might need to adjust your attitude a whole lot. You aren't seeing the reality of the situation, they don't need you, there are hundreds applying for work everyday, what sets you apart?
You haven't been in the job market for 3 years by your own admission and I think there is more to your story than you are telling us. I say that because in jobs just like in life... "you either have what you want, or you have all the reason why you don't" You are focusing on the reasons why you are not getting a job, no wonder your search is fruitless.
I wish I could buy you for what you are actually worthy and sell you for what you think you are worth. Now think about that for a moment, your attitude hasn't seen reality in many years, again I ask you to answer for yourself... "what do I offer a prospective employer?"
How about being there on the job 5 minutes before your start time, how about being there to actually bring benefit to the employer, having a great attitude and adding to the workforce, not sucking the life out of it. I wish you well and hope you come to a better attitude about your value in the workforce.
Having the right attitude is 99% of the battle. Just a quick reality check.

EXCUSE ME !!!! Dinky. You live in CA you know nothing about how the temp agencies work here in CT so stuff your arrogance up your ass. By the way as for my attitude my attitude is against the temp agencies for there own arrogance. Let me tell you this when I wasn't working for temp agencies I never was late for work nor missed time from work except for when I was sick or injured. In fact I was always a half an hour or more early for work and I sat in the parking lot for 20 minutes and then went in and punched a time clock 3 minutes early with permission from the boss. I worked probably more hours in one day than you did as well. YOU look like the type who only works an 8 hour shift. then goes home and turn into a couch potato. I used to work 14 hours in one shift from the time I punched "IN" a time clock until I punched "OUT a time clock. I did my fair share and more for my employer and still got called on the carpet a few times. I worked that job for 13 months 4 days a week.
When I left that job I was forced into the temp work and believe me you are either without a job assignment more often than naught or you had a job assignment that didn't last long enough to gain permanent hire status. I worked hard at all my jobs everyone of them. Even the temp ones. Now I have a spinal condition and many places won't hire me because they don't want to take the risk of hiring me. My diagnosis for my spinal problem which prevents me from heavy lift work was in 2004. I can't lie about my back and spine problems when it comes to looking for work because it is noticeable anyway. So they just give me the excuse that they always give the position has been filled or we don't want the risk.

You can say anything you wish, but I have a question... Is your arrogance keeping you from seeking other types of work? Something you can do even with your physical limitations? I'm 110% physically disabled with a spinal injury and I do no physical work at all, so I have to work with other peoples bodies, not mine.
I got news for you "tits", your attitude you expressed is a problem, of course they want you to be on time and do a days work for a days pay, what are you thinking? Nothing else is acceptable and for your self-righteousness maybe a problem for you and keeping you stuck where you are. If I'm an Asshole or not, it doesn't change your situation one bit. Remember I have a job, I'm working and you are not!
That should really piss you off.
BTW, I have never punched a time clock in my life, I have respect for those who do, however, I wanted better for my life, so I started my own company a few years ago and became a millionaire a few time over.
I run a million square foot manufacturing plant here in Southern California and my hiring team is constantly on the lookout for qualified people, we currently have about 500 hourly employees.
You really think geography makes a difference, it doesn't. A job is a job, and work is work and being on time is important even in Connecticut.
If you really meant what you said when you wrote...
"Most Temp Agencies here in my home state expect too much of their temp employees as far as reliability and dependability." ...then you just don't understand, you just don't get it.
When we hire bodies [and that is what they are] we hire [or we look for] people who are reliable and dependable, the good ones we hire directly after 90 days. Let that sink into your thought for a moment.
You sound like a person who is just going down the same path in life and hoping for a different outcome each day... Thats NUTS! and you don't seem like you are nuts to me.
