Not sure if you're still searching, but I'd recommend Sharyn McCrumb. Her novels provide plenty for a reading group to discuss: McCrumb's character's are skillfully developed, her settings well-researched, her stories multi-layered.

While I am not sure they qualify as literature, they are diverting: the mysteries of Phil Richman. A single mom, vicar of a church at a nexus of ancient power, the novels are sort of pulpy, sort of not. The first is "Wine of Angels". But, then, Oliver Twist started as a magazine serial, as did much of Dickens' shelf. Richman's novels are at least unique in a genre that had been beaten to death.

I suggest Dorothy Sayers. The Lord Peter Wimsey novels. "Whose Body?" is the first published -- in 1923, to my surprise. I think of her as '30's.
