I believe that consciousness is neither outside the domain of science, nor has science failed to tackled it; it is that consciousness is the foundation for sciences, the ground from which the sciences arise.
Science can study matter, but has never shown us a particle of matter itself. Science can study space, but it has no idea of the composition of space. Science can study different forms of energy but has not seen energy itself.
The sciences are a result of the evolution of consciousness and are very necessary for the betterment of life on this planet.
However, science can sometimes try to prove its own existence by denying the existence of consciousness, often because, in the pure experience of consciousness, there is no-thing, including the scientists and the sciences.
