I have rheumatoid arthritis. I have just been diagnosed 2 months. What a shocker! I am 63 years old and have always been healthy---rarely had a cold. Actually I consider myself lucky because there are so many people much younger then me who have RA or worse diseases. I got it at a time when the meds are better at controlling it so I am told.
My big problem is trying to figure this whole thing out. I have a rheumatologist who seems like he's doing everything right. I am on predisone and methotrexate and it's working well. Hopefully, I will be put on enbrel or similar drug and taken off predisone and maybe mexthorexate. I am concerned about the long term effects.
I have the most severe form of RA which I'm really not sure of what that means. Does it mean I will be deformed within 5 years? Or will the new drugs keep my joints from stiffening up? Another big fear is cancer from being on these drugs too long. I would also like to know if these drugs wear off after many years. I have been looking all over for support groups but can't seem to find any in my area. Any help would be appreciated.
