Sure it works in other countries. As long as you carry supplemental insurance to cover the things the national system finds it can no longer cover. (France & Canada) If you don't mind waiting 6 weeks for an MRI that might have found something soon enough for a doctor to save your life had it been done right away. (Canada) Or if you have the money to go get private health care in another country. (England & Canada) If you don't mind waiting in an ambulance for hours, so the hospital doesn't risk being prosecuted for making you wait more than 4 hrs in the emergency room. (England) If your country allows a private health care system to operate alongside the national system. (Italy) If you don't mind third world conditions in your hospitals and doctors offices. (Cuba & Southern Italy) If you like the idea that American doctors will start moving to countries that allow the free market to operate, so they can make a decent living again and not be burdened by all the government regulations. (England) If you don't mind the government committing what would be considered Armed Robbery if practiced by anyone else, for the purpose of making you feel better and assuage your misplaced guilt, and to pay for something that should be each persons own responsibility. I'm sorry, but if I get cancer and can't afford to pay for the treatment myself, I'm not going to go crying that people who don't even know me should somehow be responsible. Using that logic, it should be okay if I decided to bypass the government and steal the money I need. After all, I need it, and I'm not responsible.

The difference is, they earn that money, based on services and products rendered. You can earn big money, if you have the desire and the will to do so. Or would you prefer that the government continue to hold a loaded weapon at the back of every working man and woman in order to provide you with something you didn't earn?
The insurance industry needs to be reformed, but there also needs to be Tort reform as well, and the government needs to get out of health care. These and other things have caused the costs to skyrocket. Getting the government involved more will only make it worse. Check out the state of health care in all those countries where a nationalized system supposedly works. They are all having problems delivering care in a timely manner, and with having ready access to the latest technology. They are all having problems with continuing to fund the system, and are either cutting back on services, or requiring their citizens to carry supplemental insurance.
