Better than dead, tho, what with his cracked hoof. I hate horse racing. (The industry, not the horses.)

It's not so much he "missed" a steroid shot. The trainer (or someone over him) decided to stop giving the shots for the period of the Crown.

Not that it makes a lot of difference. Steroids are used to build muscle. Once the muscle is built, it maintains fairly well with reduced steroid use. In this case, a couple of months wouldn't have been enough for the muscles to deteriorate.

BTW, steroids also seem to calm some horses. You know how high strung world class athletes can be. Maybe steroids are actually a good thing in some ways.

Steroids are not only used to build muscle but they aid in recovery (which is why they are often legitimately prescribed). This effect is often overlooked and is highly important because it allows atheletes to come back from workouts a lot quicker than they normally would.

Steroids are, in fact, legal (so far) in thoroughbreds for racing. The decision was made not to gove BB steroids so as not to "taint" his expected victory at Belmont. Guess that didn't work out so well

They said Big brown is a smart horse. Maybe he didn't want to run today.

It was so freakin' hot I don't blame him.

He doesn't have to run another step.

He won the Fla.Derby, K.Derby, Preakness Stakes.

He has good bloodlines .He is sold to be a stud.

he will have a good life.

The horse that won ran a heck of a race wire to wire. Congrats to the trianer Nick Zito.

I agree. The horse that won ran a hell of a race. A young jockey. He went wire to wire.

it was all focused on BB.

same as when Barbaro broke down in the Preakness a couple years ago. Bernandini got no credit.

he ran a heck of a race. he is a good horse.

Horse racing is never predictable. but they should give more focus on TV to the winner than a beaten favorite.

Richard Sandomir of the NY Times really nailed ABC on their coverage. But I'm not sure what else we could have expected. Disney has turned ESPN into a running joke and they are on the way to making ABC the same.
