There are two great events during the summer in Seward - the 4th of July celebration featuring a mountain race up Mt. Marathon ... you'll never forget it. And the Seward Silver Salmon Derby in mid-August ... also something you'll never forget.

The "military resort" is actually called the "Rec Center". You can visit the Exit Glacier about a 12 mile drive up Resurrection Canyon ... see photo. There are hiking trails around the mountains there ... keep an eye open for bear and mountain goats. The fishing is spectacular and many charters are available. If you like sight seeing ... you might enjoy the Kenai Fjords tour: whales, seals, sea lions, sea otters, birds of every description and unbelievable scenery.

The road from Anchorage to Seward is listed by the AAA's as one of the top most scenic roads in North America.

Thanks for your input. We are really looking forward to the trip. We were hoping to go this year but work got in the way. We will fly into Anchorage and debated whether to drive or take the rail to Seward. I think we have decided on driving.

I definitely recommend a car. The train is nice and the scenery gorgeous, but when you arrive, how ya gonna get around? I like having a vehicle so I can get off the beaten path. I have some Alaska travel tips if your interested.
