I have a very dear friend that I have known since the 4th grade.

The only stumbling block to our being able to keep our friendship on it's very long, steady course with almost no bumps in the road has been her complete egotistical, Mr Perfect, I'm so smart I can't stand it, husband, who also, naturally thinks he is God's gift to women, as well....

My husband tolerates conversations with him. No matter what the topic my friend's husband is always the best, or most knowledgeable person on the subject etc.

They do live out of state from us, and though I would love to see my friend much more often than we are able to, I am grateful for the distance when I think of having to listen to "Hal" talk about himself.

At our most recent get together, he totally embarassed our sweet, college aged waitress, as well as the rest of us, (sans my friend who seems to bask in his greatness)when he decided that she needed a lesson in the correct way to open a bottle of wine.

I wanted to crawl under our table to hide. I could not believe that anyone could be so crass.

It didn't even end there! Her husband then went on to tell all of us at the table, that he has been thanked in many restaurants by management in the past for "teaching the wait staff" valuable skills!! The manager came out to our table shortly after he made the above statement. Again, I was pawing at the tablecloth, assessing my ability to scramble under the low table....The manager thanked "Hal", smiled and "Hal" beemed and said, "Oh you are welcome!", still in his complete and utter fog of his massive ego.

No, but enough about you. Let's talk about me.

I read a great quote some years ago. "Exalt yourself and you'll be humbled. humble yourself and you'll be exalted".

I know a few like this. I just like to watch in amazement. It no longer bothers me although it used to. I must say that this behavior is fascinating.

My mom always said people like that are actually very insecure and have very low self esteem. I think they like the sound of their own voice. I have several people in my life who '"know more than anyone else"! Boy is it fun when they're all in the same room!!

I know that it’s hard, but I stay away from people like that if I can.

I walked by my wife’s TV the other day and heard Dr Phil say “he has a cowboy hat and no cattle”. I think this sums it up.
