I am sorry to hear that you say your life "fell apart." I, too, once felt that my life had fallen apart but looking back on it now, I made it more difficult than it needed to be, in some ways. And another way to look at it is that I grew a lot spiritually because of the suffering that I endured.
I know that it's sometimes hard to hear that it will get better when you're in the middle of something traumatic, stressful and life-changing, but it can and does get better. Healing often occurs with time. While I don't know your situation, I do know how it feels to have your life "fall apart," so to speak.
My take on all of this is that people believe in these things because they work for them, yes. And I would suggest to you that even if you don't believe in them, it still works for you (but in the negative sense--as in "falling apart.")
I know that when you're feeling like your life has fallen apart, that it can be a giant leap to try to think positively, so I offer you this suggestion from the contemporary masters of the law of attraction, Abraham-Hicks: Find the next feeling of relief when you are feeling you are falling apart.
Just find that feeling to feel a little bit better and stay there (at least 17 seconds is good). With practice, you will find that it will be easier to stay longer and longer in a better feeling place.
If relief comes from support from a professional, by all means go for that, too.
The Secret was an introduction to the law of attraction. I have found that I had to read and learn more in order to understand it and Abraham-Hicks is what clarified it for me.
I created a Law of Attraction group here on TBD, If you are interested, feel free to join.
I wish you the best with your situation.
Warmly,
Barbara

Sage, I know that I wouldn't be reciting my resume on my deathbed, and wishing that I'd worked more hours or not taken so much vacation! For me, life is about love: loving myself, others and God.

Thank you as well Barbara, for so much helpful feedback.
Jeff, About lives falling apart, what I have learned is not to fight what I cannot change - Of course we always look for new hopes, medicines and healings but what is inevitable is easier accepted as a form of completion to an old stage of life –
There have been many people and other books that can help when our lives are or seem to be falling apart, such as the Dalai Lama, Mahatma Gandhi, The Bible, the book of Kahlil Gibran.
Greatest of wishes to all ~
