Ah.....so right on. A friend is one of your chosen family vs one of your given family. A friend is that person that you can pick up the phone and call, even though you haven't spoken in weeks or months, and pick up right where you left off. And a friend is someone who will always walk beside you, no matter what...

I totally agree! A true friend must let you in all the way. Meaning; you have to be as vulnerable as they are. Every quality you desire in a friend must be equally brought to the table. Sure, at times it takes as much work as a marriage but in the end it's definitely worth it. No reservation, no guilt.

I always thought this was funnuy.... "A good friend will help you move, a better friend will help you move a body"......

My concept of friend(s) was well-expressed by Homer in his epic:
"... what a noble hound that is over yonder ... : his build is splendid; is he as fine a fellow as he looks, ...
"... There was not a wild beast in the forest that could get away from him when he was once on its tracks. ...
"Argos passed into the darkness of death, now that he had seen his master once more after twenty years."
Homer, Odyssey, Book 17

I recently reconnected with an old girlfriend from high school after 30 years. Though we both have changed drastically in appearance we didn't change inside.
It is funny how close our lives resemble each others. I guess we would have done well together after all. She is now my second best friend (after my wife) and we talk almost daily.
I have had many close friends and many that were not so close. Honesty is the quality I look for in a friend. I don't mind a friend telling me I'm being a dope. I actually appreciate it.

MY definition:
a person who always disappears when you need them most
Points and laughs when you make a mistake
Is the first to point out each and every minute flaw
Oh,... wait you said friend, I thought you said wife... Sorry, never mind.

Karen, I think you've nailed it! I can't think of anything else to add. I would love to have you as my friend. We think the same on this subject.
Scarecrow!! Where have you been? I have missed you. Or maybe you are just not reading my posts anymore. But it is good to see you.
And i have to agree with what everyone has written about the definition of very good friend. Glad I have some.
