Hello, Phil. I am brand new to TBD and am a huge fan of classic prog rock. My favorites are Yes, Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, The Strawbs, Jethro Tull, The Syn, and CiRCA (hey, who are these last two?!!). I hope that the group becomes more active than it appears to be now.

I will never forget the day, as a teen, when my neighbor "Red" played for us a new album that just came out: Permanent Waves by Rush. I have been hooked on prog since. So thanks for starting the group, Phil. My "big three" have always been Yes, Rush and Metallica. I then became a huge Dream Theater, Queensryche and Fates Warning fan in the late 80s, when progressive rock turned into progressive metal.
Now the torch belongs to 2 bands that I consider todays best: Pain of Salvation and Tool. A third is Symphony X, who can best be explained by the phrase "Yes meets Metallica". I still can't get over how good Tool is, especially their last 2 releases. As for Pain of Salvation, they should be looked into by anyone who loves prog.
I hope to hear about some new bands to check out. Later!

Where in the Catskills? I grew up in the town of Catskill. I love all kinds of music but prog rock is my favorite. I get goosebumps when I hear "Whiter Shade of Pale". There was a station in I think Newburgh or Poughkeepsie that played stuff like that and I could only hear it at night, had two DJs named Terry and Thomas.

Porcupine Tree. Ah, yes. If you haven't tried them you should. I always thought they reminded me of Pink Floyd when I first discovered them.
Too lazy to check back but for whoever stated that the music today just doesn't move him, you haven't looked deeply. There is some good stuff out there and don't expect to find it on the radio. I have backtracked and have discovered music that I could have been listening to when I was a wee lad. Example: Early Pink Floyd that didn't get airplay. Good stuff.
A new one for me is Godspeed You Black Emperor! and even though Arcade Fire (I don't think) doesn't fit the category, they are really good also. Add Tortoise to the list also.

To reanimate this thread, didn't we have a blues guy in the group?

Yeah, he was one great inovative guitarist. I met him a couple of times in the 60's & 70's. A real nice guy.
