A new study strongly suggests low levels of HDL, "good" cholesterol, can cause memory problems for those of us 55 and older.

It also suggests low HDL may be implicated in dementia like alzheimer's.

The desired HDL level is more than 40 mg/dL. Mine's . . . what was I saying?

To raise HDL and lower LDL cholesterol, the American Heart Association recommends exercising regularly; eliminating trans fats from the diet; reducing the intake of all fats, especially saturated fats; and consuming monounsaturated fats, such as olive, canola and peanut oils. Statins can also improve HDL and LDL cholesterol levels, when they pose a heart risk.

Fiber is real important too, garlic, beans popcorn, advacados all lower cholesterol. I had really high cholesterol but brought it down with diet, exercise & medication.

HDL: Mine was 71 but in the course of a year I managed to increase it to 91. Here's what my Doc told me: Omega 3 (3 grams a day) Flax seed meal ( 5 tbs a day), reduced fat (eat the good fats...we all know what those are!) and regular exercise but it doesn't have to be manic exercise. 2 to 3 times a week with 30 mins cardio ideally.

I'm not so much worried about lowering it, mine's under 120.

But the news for HDL and memory makes me want to raise my HDL.

The Mayo Clinic has some information on that. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hdl-cholesterol/CL00030

(Shouldn't the mayo clinic be about improving the mix and finding new recipes that use mayo?)

If your cholesterol is high, the thyroid should be checked as well, particularly looking at the TSH level. The thyroid controls every cell in the body. When I was put on the correct level of Synthroid, my cholesterol level dropped by about 90 points, without taking a statin drug! I agree that proper weight, diet, and exercise are also very important.
