Otter - I read this and loved it. Then my mind started working, and I was hoping that what you lost then is not what you need now, or what you lost then, made you what you are now, and you are happy with that, or that what you lost then got you to rethinking what you really need.
I am always thinking of that silver lining, and how, what you lost had teeth, and could have turned around and bit 'ya. (And here my MIL thinks I'm a pessimist). I'm not. I hope it was a constructive or reversible loss, Otter. You are such a wonderful writer.

This is what I tell myself for I cannot bear to say aloud that it will never not ever no never
return.

This is heartbreaking, Otter, and so moving.
I often refer to that great philosopher, Mick Jagger, but since lostmutt beat me to it, I'll fall back on my second favorite, Yogi Berra, "It ain't over 'til it's over."

You could give Yogi a run for his money, Westerly. :-D
Seriously, this is very profound.

Everyone is too kind and I'm grateful to have a place to share and express these (universal) feelings.
You all rock.

As the saying goes "set it free, if it doesn't come back it was not meant to be." We all have a different "it."

Sometimes "it" does come back and it can be the most wonderful thing.
