And do you remember the nice soft finish fabric those gloves were made off, none of the plastic-like polyesters, but some really fine brushed cotton, it was so warm and cozy. And sometimes they had a pearl button or a bit of lace, heaven to my little 5 or 7 year old self :-), along with the lace hankies for dress up situations.
When my great aunts (lifetime catholic school teaching spinster sisters) passed away we inherited dozens of pairs of those white gloves, many still in brand new boxes, as well as hundreds of still boxed handkerchiefs. Guess both had been school teacher gift favorites for many years, and the sisters had just put them all away in random drawers and cupboards.

In grammar school we had to wear dresses to school, even when it was below zero and the wind was blowing. We could, however, wear pants with the dresses, but had to take them off when we reached school.
In Junior High School, our dresses had to reach to the floor when we kneeled. By the end of High School, there was no limit, and I am embarassed to think about how short my skirts were!
We weren't allowed to wear pants to school until my Junior year, and then it was pantsuits only. By the time I graduated, girls were wearing blue jeans with the seams slit open, laced together with leather shoestrings.
Oh, does anyone else remember the popularity of fishnet stockings???? Ugh!

I remember the fish net stockings! I WAS 8 OR 9 and for Christmas I got a pink hip-hugger mini-skirt(w/the wide belt, navy blue),navy blue fish nets & white go-go boots. I was thrilled to death to be so stylish! Ha!Ha! LOL!!!

those dresscodes! we were not allowed to wear pants to school until my senior year, and skirts had to be no more than 2 inches above floor when kneeling and, yes, they had a measuring tape handy and waiting for you if a teacher made a referral. my husband and i had a friend who was suspended from school because his hair touched his collar. when he returned to school with the "proper" haircut, he had wire-rim glasses and was told to remove them. he refused and was expelled, for that alone - he was not otherwise a troublemaker. and this was a public high school in an average community around chicago! good grief, when i think about this - no wonder we started protesting "the establishment!!"
