Olympic heart

As the "Go world" ads for the Olympics have been showing up on television, with their stories of grit and determination, I found myself a couple of nights ago telling my son about the final of the women's marathon a few years ago, with a runner who barely made it across the line. And that meant that I needed to go find out who and when.

Her name is Gabriella Anderson-Schiess, and it was Los Angeles 1984 (definitely more than a few years!). I share this with all of you.

It just goes to prove that with all the political garbage surrounding the Olympics, there are true examples in the world of people giving their all to just compete. Sometimes the Olympic Ideal does hold firm and fast!

I agree. Just listen to the crowd representing the entire world cheer unconditionally for an individual who's origin simply does not matter, and who has absolutely no chance for a medal. Sheer determination at it's best. Thanks to Katherine for posting this thread.

This gave me a lump in my throat. I remembered the men's marathon during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. My friend and I lined the sidewalks with several thousand other people watching these tiny runners flash by. The first, second ant third groups paseed us, and then we started seeing the stragglers coming one at a time. Finally, the last guy came pounding along, thirty-five minutes behind the leaders. He didn't have a chance in hell, but the crowd lined up along Peachtree Road set up a HUGE cheer and ovation for the tough little man who was not going to let himself down.

Thanks, Katherine.

I remember watching that live. We were all crying and cheering.
