Fall TV's 10 Most Addictive Shows

My name is Holly and I'm a TV addict. And anyone who knows me, knows I am beyond ready for the new TV season to get started.

For me, the season officially began Monday, Sep 17th, with Prison Break. I know there are lots of new shows, but right now I'm just looking forward to getting back into my old routine. Jack. Michael. Linc. Booth. Bones. Hiro. Claire. Meredith. McDreamy. Simon. Kate. Sawyer. That other Jack. And all the rest. I've missed you all…

With that said, here are what I consider the ten most addictive shows on TV and why:

Prison Break: With Michael in prison again, and the promos saying "the next 20 feet are the most dangerous for him," and the big question of "what is SONA," I love that this show is smart, and almost demands that I pay attention.

24: I believe they're going to kill Jack off this year. THAT is what I'm tuning in to see. Not that I want him dead or gone. That's just my prediction. And since every season has a different storyline, I can't start talking about other angles just yet.

Heroes: Superheroes, end of the world, crooked politicians, time-travel, and great characters. What's not to love? But is it addictive? Yes, it is. They spent last year building the characters and setting the pace. Now I want to see it all play out.

The Amazing Race: I totally love how everyone comes unglued, and shows that crappy side of themselves that makes you love to hate some, and totally root for others. The magic is in the editing, and they want us to feel everything the contestants do: the cold floor outside the closed gates that they're forced to sleep on; the exhaustion; the contempt for their partners; the taste of some creepy local food; the anxiety over shaving your head; and the sheer exhilaration of accomplishment and defeat. The Amazing Race might be the ultimate addictive show on TV because I can see myself as one of the competitors. But not one friend, family member, or colleague of mine is willing to be my teammate.

Grey's Anatomy: I have a love/hate relationship with this show, but it's still pretty darn addictive. I hate the marketing, and actually don't care for the soap-opera stuff, but really love the drama. And, yes – there is a difference. Drama holds my attention, opera is noise in the background. I know this show is good when I'm forced to stop multi-tasking and watch: cool surgeries; the quiet moments before the music tells you how to feel; and the double personalities of almost every character.

Lost: Gotta keep it high on my list, because as frustrated as I was in the early part of last year, I got invested again near the end. But three months later I barely remember what happened. All I really need to know is where are they and what's with all the black smoke?

ER: This show, quite simply, is a part of my life. I don't really care who's on, who's dying, or what the weather is like (Chicago weather is so much a part of the drama). I just want to have my little hour of ER – drama, blood, guts, borderline personalities, and okay, sorry folks, but I love John Stamos.

Dirt: A new favorite with seedy, questionable characters; drugs; hate; love; sex; pretty people; and L.A. I love the whole tabloid thing, the moral choices facing Lucy, as well as her love/hate relationship with herself. The fact that she's played perfectly by Courtney Cox just adds to the fun. And I don't even know if this one is coming back next season.

American Idol: Once they get started (and get down to the truly talented top 12), I really care. There is no show I enjoy talking about more. I NEVER listen to what Paula or Randy have to say, and I try to give Simon credit for being in a foreign country, despite his lack of tact and a limited vocabulary. But you can't argue with the fact that he knows talent, and he has given us a great indulgence. Hey, he's even made me listen to the radio.

Supernatural: I have to share one of my little guilty pleasures with you. It's dark and funny. Totally love the sound track, the story line of good/evil, and the cliffhanger that leaves us knowing SSS sold his soul to the devil (literally), and that Dean's evil side is taking over. Not since Dark Shadows have I been so scared and ashamed of my viewing choice all at the same time.

So what shows are you dying to see? What day do you have secretly marked on your calendar?

OK....I confess: I cannot wait for Private Practice. Kate Walsh is adorable and my daughter has an enormous crush on Chris Lowell.....so we will be there for the opening bell.

As long as we're being honest, here - I even watched the "From Gray's Anatomy to Private Practice" which was on last week as a preview. I've set the DVR for both of them.

What did you think? I was kind of disappointed. But, totally loved Grey's Anatomy.

So far, my new favorite shows are Kid Nation and Kitchen Nightmares (cannot tell you how much this show makes me laugh OUT LOUD! ) I watched the BBC version, and Ramsey came across a lot more "strategic" - I loved how he really helped to save a restaurant by tackling the core elements (food, management, marketing, decor), but then the brits were a little more polite and appreciative of his "expertise." Try this one (you can also see the full episodes at fox.com). It makes you think twice about going out to eat... :-)

Heroes, Bones, and Prison Break are feeling better than ever --- what did you find time to watch this week, any new addictions?

I agree - I've taken Private Practice off my DVR list. I was expecting really powerful women and got 1950's fluff. I loved Addison on Gray's, but I'm not happy with her here.

I have been digging Mad Men since it came out. The show's attention to detail in the darkest corners of the script and the shoots is quite amazing. It has to be one of the most detail-oriented programs I've ever seen.

Although it is one of the few shows I actually watch (as opposed to listen to while I'm doing something else), I can't get excited about it. My husband says the actors seem to have a hard time getting over being in a period piece, and to some extent I agree. I think there are a few anachronisms, too, but I'm not motivated enough to check.

Never heard of it... I'll add it to my TiVo and let you know what I think next week! (thanks, one more hour of my life down the drain :-)

I LOVE Mad Men! There was an article in AdWeek recently about how the show is based on a real life team at BBDO in the 50s, and though advertising had changedquite a lot by the time I got involved in the 70s, it still had enough of that old boys flavor to give me a sense that Mad Men is largely realistic. I'm a huge fan, even though some of the characters and behaviors are totally offensive. Thanks for reminding me to mention this great program Greg,

I confess, I haven't had the chance to see any of it yet, but I had the honor & priviledge of working on and just off Madison Avenue in this so-called 'Golden Age'. I'm looking forward to it ...

it truly is a very interesting gripping show...other than that I also enjoy American Idol and 24.

CSI ( Las Vegas ) is quite possibly the most accurate of it's genre ever produced, but I assure you that that is not written and produced about Las Vegas ...

The closest CSI to this show would have to be Hawaii. The furthest from the truth however is CSI ( Miami ). This from the point of view or perspective of Florida's 19th Judicial District, Office of the Medical Examiner. I was in the Miami Morgue twice a month for over fourteen years in an official capacity ...

I can't wait for Battlestar Galactica to start their new season (no idea when it starts up again... but I know the SciFi channel has signed on for another season). It is by far, one of the most intelligent and complex shows on television these days. A superb cast, and the season finale took my breath away with all the surprises...

Cane - Wasn't Jimmy Smits the sexiest guy in the universe last night?!

Oh yeah, I think this show has great promise. Of course, Jimmy Smits is a great in this as we'd all hoped, but don't you also just love Hector Elizondo...what a great actor, and so perfect in the patriarch role. Can't wait to see how this plays out.

Thanks for that link Talia. I read the piece and I agree. The writers of Private Practice need to watch Damages, or The Closer, Battlestar Galactica or even Ugly Betty for some inspiring female characters. Man, those ladies on Private Practice are annoying...

So, what did YOU think?

I'm sorry, I'm pretty sure I'm going to tire of Private Practice very quickly. I love premieres, where they work very hard to show you the characters, set up the premise, and suck you in... P2 did a pretty good job on the first 2, missed it completely on sucking me in...

I kinda agree with NYT in that I don't like how P2 showcases these women - so weak and messed up. Okay, it's a soapy night-time drama... .

At least at the end of ep 1, Addison's voice came out - that confident, strong woman peaked out. But, the rest of it kind of makes me quesy.

As for Bionic Woman, I TiVod it and haven't had time to watch --- I'm not that excited, but don't want to react to the critics yet.

Agree with all that Private Practice is not off to a good start. Its eye candy, but not compelling, not very likable characters. What's with this trend (every since Allie McBeal) of creating these strong professional women who are always a mess in their personal lives? It rarely rings true for me, and does not match the women I know in the real world. Sure, we all have our challenges, but anyone who is reasonably competent in one aspect of live usually has some skills spill over into other aspects. But not on TV. SO unless PP rediscovers the Addison we grew to like on GA, that shows not staying on my TIVO

I just watched Reaper the other night and I'm hooked...Ray Wise (remember him from Twin Peaks) plays the devil-as-channeled-through-George-Hamilton. Basic premise is that a 21 year old slacker's soul was sold to the devil before he was born and now it's time to pay up by putting all the baddies that have escaped from hell back where they came from. Great writing and directed by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma, etc.).

At first glance it looks like a teen comedy, but give it a chance...the marketing belies its intelligence.

- Survivor: China. I haven't missed a season yet.

- The Biggest Loser

- Heroes

As far as new series, I will be checking out The Bionic Woman.

As far as reruns, I never flick past a Seinfeld episode.

Private Practice was not nearly as bad as the critics said. In fact, I can easily see it getting just as addictive as Gray's Anatomy.

Given the debut of Gossip Girls, Dirty Sexy Money, Cane and now this new show tonight, Big Shots....I have to conclude we are returning to the Dallas/Dynasty days. It's all about rich, souless people who screw each other. I wonder if some economist could plot the return of those shows with some hiccup in our economy.

Hey, just a thought.

Something is wrong with me. Out of all the shows that are on - well, I am a fan only of Ugly Betty. Well, Idol too, of course. AND dancing with the Stars. Oh, and I did accidentally watch Private Practice last night. It was not intentional. Maybe I will watch that one again. Hmmmm maybe I should watch ALL of them but when would I get anything else done!!!!?? How would I manage without Nancy Grace, 20/20, Larry King??????

welcome to the club, you are SO a TV-addict. :-)

I'm shocked at home much TV I 'care' about ... and, yet, my TiVO has at least freed me to what what I want when I want.

What did you think about Private Practice? Are you a Grey's Anatomy fan, too?

So far, I've only caught Ugly Betty. I always seem to find something more important or interesting to do instead of watching all the great TV. I'm just a little to fidgety to sit still for an hour.

Bec+, that's why I love my DVR. I have certain times of day when I want to watch TV and those are never when the shows are on. I record and then watch all or part at my leisure.

Brothers and Sisters is a fun soap opera and the first time I've ever appreciated what Harrison Ford sees in Calista Flockhart.

Damages is gripping -- can't see where it's going.

I heard a rumor that Curb Your Enthusiasm is coming back, does anyone know the truth about that?

Saving Grace is unlike anything I've seen on TV, and Holly Hunter is great.

I've already seen 3 episodes of the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO. That and Office make me laugh until I hurt!

Curb Your Enthusiasm. Did anyone catch the episode with Larry in the restaurant solo dining next to another (annoying) solo diner talking loudly on his cell phone? What Larry did then I want to do now every time I come across the cell phone chatters.

What's addictive to me is high quality writing, acting and production--such as Weeds. I love that show!

I am not a TV watcher, but I secretly enjoy watching, I Love New York II, on VH1. Anyone else out there?
