I am loathe (be it apparent or not) to lord my opinions on the group, but I am moved to make this exception. I read constantly (oh! would that I wrote as much as I read) and read fairly widely, although I am inclined toward modern literature. Until about a week ago I had read only one of Cormac McCarthy's beautiful works, "The Crossing." I recognized him straightaway as a clear, honest and deeply talented writer and was ashamed that I'd missed or ignored him.
Other writers, so many books, my own life and distractions... I did not return to Mr. McCarthy until last week. He won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for "The Road," a master work which I am reading with great awe and considerable perturbation. It is not for the faint of soul but no one person who loves to read and craves to write should miss this extraordinary book. I wept in the night dreaming about what I'd read before sleep.
Highly recommended.
