Sadly, that quiet is about to be broken just northwest of Marquette. There's huge nickel sulphide mine proposed up there on the headwaters of the Salmon Trout River, the last place in the US where the Coaster Brook Trout spawns. Grim stuff -- take a look: -- http://www.savethewildup.org/
Then go visit while it's still clean & wonderful. :)

Man, I hate to see that. I love the UP, even though I've never lived there. Beautiful country. My favorite place to visit on a weekend. Stop at all the waterfalls we see.

The sad part is the residents not the new ones but the ones that have seen the copper mines close the wood industry get legislated to near death, need jobs so this come up, they are so desperate for employment so they can stay in the land they love instead of moving to a more populated area. I don't blame them for taking the chances of toxin's being haul in to make Sulfide Mining possible. So they can stay there. The UP has been a depressed area for so long, these people are begging for anything other then tourism. Then they get a bunch of (I'll be sorry I said this I know) tree huggers coming in and telling them, it's better to starve to death or have to move away then to soil your precious land, that we come visit occasionally well you try to live here and feed your families!

I don't blame the people for wanting jobs. But why don't we have more tourism or movie making in such beautiful country, so it's destroyed less than mining does?

You know that would be great but a lot of the UP there isn't cell phone coverage, or available utilities. When I lived there one of my friend built her own house from the lumber they harvested and milled from there own land. She covered the outside with cedar shakes she cut herself. The place was completely self maintained, by a gas power generator and wood heat. Kerosene lamps, candles she made herself. It was amazing, but she was just one of many amazing people I knew there. These people have a spirit you don't see in most people anymore. They are proud and self sufficant, they would prefer to have government to mind there own business. They just want to work and take care of their families, and pretty much be left alone.

WOW! Awesome pictures. When I was a kid we traveled the UP but I barely remember. I've been as far as the Sault but that's it.
My 16 yo is considering Northern which would make me very happy. She's a soccer player and one of her friends plays for them so she's hoping a good word will get her there and able to play.
I work at U of M hospital. Can't tell ya how many yoopers are there. TONS. They all say they same thing. It's beautiful but they came down here for the same reason. WORK. Sad.........
God's country.
