I read an article recently that said that we tend to formulate an image of ourselves in our younger years and to see this image regardless of changes in our physical appearance. This article was specifically responding to problems of anorexics and dieters neither of which actually tend to seem weight changes when they view themselves in the mirror. A negative feeling about the body tended to persist even after weight loss by the people in the study.

When I was younger, my mother said that she had always felt like she was 24 years old. I remember looking at her and wondering what she meant. Now that I'm 53, I can say that I have always felt like I'm 28 years old. I even look at the mirror sometimes and "see" 28. But then, I see photographs of myself or videos of my dance performances and ask myself, "when did I ever become an old bag????"
I try not to look at photographs of myself very much and as for video performances....I only look at them when there are no close-ups involved. :-)
(BTW...there are some on youtube......) :-)
GREAT QUESTION.
