No kidding. It's hard to believe there are really people who think that way. You notice that somehow, the news media managed to find them.
There is a silver lining in that. People who think that way can get by unnoticed, impressing others with scripture quotes, until a situation comes along that allows their true nature to shine through. I don't think they "grew their flock" from that publicity. If anything, they lost parishioners.
I think Jerry Falwell paid a price for his choice of words. He was eventually exposed as a hateful, mean person hiding behind a smug, pious veneer.

To Shining Path:
Perhaps my negativity is misplaced. But, I dont think so. I was there to see how FEMA handled it and the trailers. I also have personal experience with Federal incompetence that cannot be mentioned publicly. I have personal experience with government appointees of both parties. I will rest on my jaded comment.
Since I am originally FROM Al. And, I have many relatives still living there, I can understand why you would think the way you do. It's probably best to discontinue this issue by saying "Everyone is entitled to their opinion".

The best history teacher I ever had said a simple but all too true adage...
"for everything you want your Government to provide there is an proportional loss of personal freedom"
Sit on the porch and wait for FEMA to save you, as for me and my family...give me a radio with decent information and will figure out the rest on our own.
Katrina victims had to battle four forces, the predictable impact of a hurricane, a government ill equipped to engage, a local governmental clusterf^^^ that could not communicate effectively and the mindset that Uncle Sam is your savior.

Never had that mindset. But, food and water and ice within 24 hours would have been nice. I have seen 3rd world governments respond quicker and more efficiently than after Katrina. There was some food and water helilifted in within 24 hours. But, you had to know where the choppers were landing and get there quickly. No, I DEFINITELY dont think uncle sam is my savior

I stockpiled water, ice, food, etc. What upset me was the lack of gasoline for the generator. Once my 25gal was gone we did without.
I think I'll get a propane fired one this winter, and a couple really big tanks for it. Then I can kick-back in the A/C and watch the suffering via satellite, rather than having to rub shoulders with the "refugees". :)
(What a nice guy I am huh)
Guess propane cylinfers wouldn't be much help in raging firestorm though would it?

I'll tell you one thing that really grabbed my A## during Katrina...the day after the gas prices along outbound routes etc ($5-$6+)...the same gas in the ground the day before.
To my mind, gouging in an emergency is worthy of retaliation. Water sales in this situation would be illegal yet a fuel that supports evacuation is not?
