I just realized I could have answered your question: Am I menopause or not?
It appears you're in the perimenopausal stage. It is the time frame which can last from 3-10 years(guideline), varying in length for each woman. This is the stage where you begin to experience hot flashes - mood swings - insomnia - irregular periods. This stage is compared to adolescence, only in reverse.
Once you have gone a year without a period, then you are postmenopausal. But the thing is, some woman have been known to have gone say 14 months without one and then have a period - if this happens, you are still menopausal. Gets a little confusing with the labels and stages.
Not sure if this helps or not.

Greetings VBright! Deb, is 100% spot on. Ops. My bad /:-} !!! I'm 55 and there seems no end in sight, still every 26 or so days.Beau keeps count (wonder why?!?) Spot here and there, always be prepared. Just more cranky sometimes, (but then, that could be just being crotchety ... oh did I just spy a cute crotch walking by ops. I digress...) obviously easily distracted (by men) . Insomnia ( whirling dervish brain) and when I get hot ... it's still about a different sort of hot flash, if you get my drift. Sometimes the whole business is quite odd and like you, very ugh. Things are changing.
I suspect I'm in full blown adolescence for one last go 'round. Me Doc. agrees and says "you're an oddity" hummmmmm ... ya think?! It feels as though I'm 13 all over again.
PM (not PMS tee hee ) me for more detail, but since I'm an "info junkie", I've been prepared for ages, keep reading everything about it all that I can find. Can send you interesting and informative links.
I'm with Deb on the acupuncture, deep tissue massage is good, watching what works in your diet and what does not. "AstroGlide" can be useful when that pencil gets stuck in the sharpener ... / ; ) Estrogen changes are a certainty. I too will refuse HRT. More rice. More soy. Less meat. Only organic as much as one can find (and who really knows about that ...but ....) vits. B-12 etc. important. Naps. Laughter. A man who tries to understand. Girlfriends ditto. All good things.

Any where, any time, I can possibly be of help. or give a chuckle, or hug. You are most welcome. So many of us now, the demographic has changed and now, finally, femopause (where did the MEN (in) Oh Pause come from :)) ? is getting the attention required so that we may make more informed decisions. Gotta hang together so we don't all hang.

Thanks for all of the tips and encouragement. I just can't imagine 3+ more years of hot flashes (both kinds) and mood swings (they don't make prozac strong enough!) and night sweats, insomnia...oh my good lord! I am going to try different teas, I think. My oldest has always had terribly painful periods, and one time I gave her some hot green tea. Worked like a charm, now she uses it all the time. Keep the tips coming ladies, I appreciate all of them!
