We have a winner! The sword is a rare Japanese Samurai with markings that have identified it as made by the Manchurian Railroad at the start of WWII. It has a combination of style and markings that are unusual for its type and is, apparently, valuable. There is additional history, but since this is a photography forum, I only posted it for the photo guessing game.

Here is some help to "refine" the guess. Think historic and I'll soon add a final photo or two that should make it pretty clear.
