Well Mary, as I have said many, many times on this blog and elsewhere... The quality of advice offered by The Secret could be compared to a patient who goes to the doctor, only to be diagnosed with cancer. But, as the patient sit there rather dejected with his lot in life, the doctor, says, "Don't fret, I have cure for all your problems." The patient is excited, as you can imagine, and asks the doctor what it is. The doctor then says, with great conviction, "It's a shot of ebola virus."

The secret to misery is not seeing the malignant ego cowering in your motives. Renouncing those motives becomes possible when you can see the pervasiveness of that state. So long as your attention is fixed on getting 'this' or 'that', or getting away form 'this' or 'that', the malicious aspect of the ego-mind has got you by the short and curly's!

In my work, focus is of utmost importance. So mindfulness for me means to bring that exactness and complete awareness into my life into the present moment with the activities I may be engaged in in the present moment.

You made me think of how exacting and focused work demands we be Mary. It sounds like you are able to concentrate very well. While I try to let go in order to enjoy the personal moments, I still need to improve on focusing so that I may enjoy my "work" moments (grin)!
You have inspired me to apply improvement to my work as I do my personal journey. Thank you.

I seem to take "mindfulness" in a totally different direction.
To me, it means simply this. If we are to keep ourselves focused on being open and connected then we certainly have to let go of past mistakes done by us or to us. This will also entail removing "false ideas" from our own minds.
When we see someone dressed in dirty clothes with unkept hair, what is our first thought? A judgement, a pity or just a noticing then a moving on. That, too me, has been the hardest.
Each of us is here for a reason and a purpose. No matter what station in life we find ourselves, each of us brought ourselves there by choice.
Noting a situation but not enveloping it, isn't that what mindfulness is all about?

Hi Andi,
What if all ideas are false?
Then, how can mindfulness help then... even mindfulness becomes a false idea.
If you are here by choice, noting a situation and completely enveloping it is what mindfulness is all about. After all, if you are here by choice, so are all your thoughts, and the person with the messy hair.
True mindfulness is not trying to run away from what your mind happens to be full of.
Let everything BE AS IT IS. That will set you free.
