This has been a very stressful week for my family due to my sister having a serious accident. In the middle of this crisis and in great anquish, my sister asked me "why did God do this to me, what is he trying to tell me?" As I answered her question to the best of my ability, I realized (again) what God is NOT to me.
I told her that my belief is that God doesn't do things to us. Things just happen. Some people think God does things to us, because if they didn't believe that, they wouldn't be able to believe that God does things FOR us, and they find that a very scary idea.
So, no I don't believe that God is the magic guy in the sky who watches our every move and rewards us or punishes us depending upon our behavior and/or some mysterious plan that he has. I don't believe he caused my sister's injury and I don't think he is going to reach down and heal her injury. I think the doctors, medicine, therapy and my sister's positive attitude will heal her.
What I do believe is that God (or god if you prefer) is a spirit that is in and around all of us. We find and experience that spirit in different ways, in ways that we can understand. It gives us hope and strength and power to solve our problems and heal ourselves. Individuals may not always recognize or name this spirit "God", but that doesn't mean it isn't there. Some people pray to that spirit, and the positive energy and thoughts that are produced by those prayers can cause miraculous things to happen.
It is somewhat scary to realize and admit that there isn't a guy up in the sky guiding and protecting us, and that may be why some religious people are so adamant about their beliefs. But personally, I find it much less scary and much less unfair than the idea that there's some guy in the sky watching and waiting to zap me if I don't "believe" properly or make a mistake. Also, having my concept of God makes it much easier to understand how there can be so many religions with differing viewpoints and why that is OK.
