The seventh point in the "tenets" of Progressive Christianity is that we should "Form ourselves into communities dedicated to equipping one another for the work we feel called to do: striving for peace and justice among all people, protecting and restoring the integrity of all God’s creation, and bringing hope to those Jesus called the least of his sisters and brothers".
For me, this is what a church and going to church is or should be all about -- forming into communities of like-minded individuals and working together to accomplish socially beneficial goals. If all religious people put their energies into goals such as feeding the hungry, creating homes for the homeless, freeing those unjustly imprisoned, etc. just think what wonderful things could happen in this world. Instead what organized religion often tends to do is emphasize differences between people, condemn others for their personal lives and actions, try to convert people from one religion to another, and so on.
Obviously there are exceptions And most churches and their members try to achieve some of these goals. But wouldn't it be wonderful if that became the primary goal of all and if we could all work together instead of continually concentrating on differences and trying to prove that we are right?
