New Role for Politicians

So I turn on my TV and there's Andy with 'Breaking News' of John Edwards' extramarital affair...(.I mean, look at his hair: what did you expect? It costs him like $300 a week to maintain?) Are you fed up yet?

Maybe it's time we make Congressional and Senatorial positions into part-time jobs. These guys make too much money. Oh, and while were at it, here's an innovative idea...instead of enacting MORE laws, why dont these guys get to work and start repealing some of the OLD LAWS. We have WAY TOO MANY damn laws in this country!

From the 'Should Teachers Be Armed' Discussion, I quote Harry Shade(bear with me, its relevent),

"As a former law enforcement officer and U.S.Army soldier, I have always found it interesting when people think the way to stop violence is with more violence. That has never worked and never will, so the introduction of more arms will just logically lead to more armed conflict. We have been at war for tens of thousands of years, costing millions upon millions of lives and that has not kept people from going to war.

Allow me some poetic license in rearranging a few words, here, for my purpose in this discussion:

I find it interesting that people think that a law abiding society can be created by passing more laws. <snip>. The introduction of more laws only leads to more people being arrested over minor infractions. We have had laws for ...years...costing us millions...and that has not contributed to making us a more honest society. <snip>

TheInquiringEye declares, Let's cut the politicians salaries in half and put them to work mopping up the legislative bureaucratic mess they've enacted over the past years! It's time we all go to our windows, open them as wide as possible and start yelling, " I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"

What do you think?

New role for Congressmen? How about 'unemployed?' I'd agree with you, but nothing will get done in Washington with all the money floating around buying influence. It's so ingrained and institutionalized now that even the Supreme Court considers it a right to buy political influence.

Oh, this system is definitely broke or to put it another way on life support. This was not what our forefathers intended our "democracy" to look like. What we have today is a system controlled by two parties who refuse to relinquish any control, politicians who have a full time job being politicians, when that was never intended and corporate money having more influence than ordinary, everyday people.

This is what has lead to the apathy that everyone seems to want to talk about but not fix. And they wonder why people vote more for their local elections, even though that is still not a very good turn out. It's because at least the local elected officials actually touch our lives everyday. They provide the police and fire protection, waste removal, water and sewer services, etc.

The politicians in DC are so far removed from the people they are supposedly serving, that corruption and lack of accountability is the norm. And Edwards is just another example of a politician who will make moral and ethical claims all while breaking them and then lie to try and cover it up, so he can maintain his power and position.

I for one am glad he was caught and exposed for the cheating, lying, greedy, power hungry man that he is.

My solution, fire them all and start over. remove big money influence by allowing people to only legally give a campaign one dollar per person, outlaw PACs (I know the free speech issue always crops up here), institute term limits and have everyone serve 2 four year terms, just like the President.

1. why do so many fall for these losers?

2. why would they think they could get away with it without getting caught?

...after all, we humans are emotional beings, there is no relationship that can over come emotions where deception is part of it, once a relationship goes bad. Seriously, could he BE more ignorant? dunno.

TIE, I think all government officials (not military soldiers or those protecting the country as such) but those trying to run the country-YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE- should not have a salary increase unless all americans do. They work for us, but somehow we end up paying dearly and end up only with empty pockets and starving children who have no education due to cuts, as well as poor health care.
