Family Traditions

In the "Things To Do In Michigan" discussion, Nurse1963 told of her family tradition of going to Frankfort every year - all the way from Missouri! Got me to thinking - what are other people's family traditions?

I come from a large family and it's hard to get everyone together all at once. We gather at Christmas, but we also have a yearly camping trip. We pick a different place each year, but when I was little, we always spent a week at School Section Park. I loved it! It was like a second home for me. Loved the lake, the pancakes made on a little green Coleman stove (the smell of propane in the morning!), sitting around the campfires in the dark with our neighbors. Wonderful memories.

We don't have many traditions left. When I was a kid we had tons.

EVERY Easter break we went to Florida to visit with my grandparents. We would drive down taking 2 1/2 days. We'd stay in the same towns on the way down.

Then, there were the Boblo trips. Every summer with Ford Motor Co. we would go on the Boblo boat and spend the day. Every once in a while we would drive thru Canada to Amherstburg (sp) and take the Ferry.

Let's see. oh, the canoe trips. The BOYS would get to go but finally after many years, they started letting the girls go. I guess they ran out of boys. It was just a weekend where the dads could get shitfaced and the kids would hang together. Fun.

Nowadays, my parents are in poor health. The only traditions left are Christmas eve at my moms and christmas day at the inlaws.

my brother, mom, and I always went shopping the day after Thanksgiving...we would eat out for breakfast and lunch and go to as many stores as we could.

When Mom died, we didn't go that year. My brother called me and said "Next year we are going!" and we have gone together ever since. The day off work is non negotiable, we go. We go for mom and for keeping up tradition. Sounds kind of silly, but it's true.

We've gone to the Michigan Rennaissance Festival every year since my husband and I moved to Michigan, back in '94. Used to be just him and me, then it was him, me, and our son, then us with the two kids. This year it will be me and just the two kids with a friend of mine and her kids. No more husband to worry about! But the Renn Fest and the family traditions live on!

That's a tough one to get past, but you gotta keep living. We always go to Canterbury Village after Thanksgiving. Not necessarily the day after--sometimes the Saturday after.

Familey Traditions are wondeful sometime they keep a familey alive Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day in pur house with the extended famalies thats were basements were for get your food and then down to the basement you would go unless one of the littlr ones would crack their head open then you would get called to first aid duty then they would be carted off to get stiches. It would aways seem to fall on MOM'S shoulders
