My six year old niece came home from school crying and her mother asked why. She said, "Sally and Jane called me names." Her mother said, "If they do it again tell them--sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me." Several days later she came home crying again and her mother asked what was wrong and she replied,"Sally and Jane called me names again." Her mother asked if she had told them the words she had learned and she said, "Yes and then they threw sticks and stones at me."

Children are so literal. I have always been entertained by how many things they don't understand that we say all the time. You find out later in their life what they really thought they meant, even my sister and I compare notes on what we thought something meant as a child.

I do feel a bit sorry for your child. I hope that the hooligans got sent to the office!
