TeeBeeDee's Gen X & Y TranslatorLet's build a glossary to figure out what the hell they're saying
CandyMeyersPosted: Sep 17, 07 11:13am No one wants to appear clueless in front of your kid or younger colleague. So as a public service to our TeeBeeDee community, let's build the ultimate glossary of favorite Gen Y & X phrases, acronyms, and slang. If you're befuddled by some phrase, just post it below. No doubt some sage TeeBeeDeenik will translate it and we'll add it to the glossary.

Posted: Sep 17, 07 5:29pm
Here's one you'll definitely want to know about, but not necessarily one to be on the receiving end of...
GFY... go f yourself

a good closing:
TTYL... talk to you later
Posted: Sep 17, 07 6:11pm
Sausage Factory / Sausagefest ... a social gathering where the guys far outnumber the girls :D
Posted: Sep 18, 07 1:22pm
Another good way to end a conversation
BFN... bye for now.
Posted: Sep 18, 07 2:26pm
Also sometimes written as TTFN:
TaTa for now
Posted: Sep 18, 07 2:54pm
interesting... must be a girl thing ;)
Posted: Sep 18, 07 3:30pm
TTFN isn't a girl thing... it's a Tigger thing! First time I ever heard tha abbreviation was in "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too"
Posted: Aug 22, 08 5:57pm
I heard this from Julie Newmar as Catwoman in the old Batman series.
Posted: Sep 19, 07 11:20am
Another variation:
CFN = Ciao for now
Posted: Dec 13, 07 4:48pm
KH ..you spelt Tigger wrong ..
It's T I dblgrr E R ..
...Froggy

Hi, Candy
There's a pretty comprehensive list of jargon and slang at:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/
While a comprehensive list of IM-style acronyms can be found at:
http://www.aim.com/acronyms.adp?aolp=
The aol list includes some of my favorites, like:
BYKT - But You *Knew* That
OTP - On the phone
P911 - Parents are Watching! :)
HTH - (Hope this helps! )
Cheers
-Jeff

Just went on to the site to find one that someone had sent me. It was there KIT - keep in touch - but I noticed that although TBA was there, TBD wasn't.
Posted: Dec 13, 07 5:11pm
Urban dictionary is one of my most visited sites. Endless laughter, especially due to examples given in sentences.
Posted: Sep 20, 07 1:57pm
So what's the key to having enough memory to retain these?
It's a whole nother issue....:-)
Posted: Sep 20, 07 3:45pm
That's the problem for me too. These were developed by teens - they seem to still have enough brain cells to keep this all in their heads.
Posted: Sep 20, 07 4:11pm
I hate it when my photographic memory is out of film, so I've found that my long memory is outclassed by a short pen on paper. There's also the print button up on my toolbar... ;-)
Posted: Sep 20, 07 4:21pm
Yep, there's all of those...and then there's the "how do I get my fingers moving fast enough"
The issues never stop.... ;-)
Posted: Dec 14, 07 11:39am
A lot of the ones I see posted here weren't made up by the current teens. Many of these were around before the Internet "went public". If you were on the Internet or one of the online services or local BBS's (computer bulletin boards) in the early days, you would be familiar with a lot of them.
Emoticons? Not invented by the teens either. I think the smiley emoticon just turned 25 this year (or was it last year?). Anyway, they've been around for quite some time. :)
I will admit there are some here that I am not familiar with - and they weren't around way back when.

On a post this weekend (http://www.tbd.com/content/post/6282#comment-15170) Robin Wolaner used MILF. Can someone interpret for me?
Posted: Sep 30, 07 5:39pm
Mother I'd Like to F*** :-)
Posted: Sep 30, 07 5:45pm
Thanks - I never would have thought of that, but would definitely take it as a compliment as Robin suggested in the other thread. I'll have to try that one on my kids - LOL

Milt (T) Is Laughing Funny?
Posted: Sep 30, 07 6:40pm
Or, Milt Is Lotsa Fun?
Posted: Sep 30, 07 7:03pm
Sorry, Milt, I tried to translate acronym before checking out other thread. I'll close my eyes so I don't see embarassment here with an OT post....
Posted: Oct 9, 07 10:08am
Talia, before Brianne slaps my wrists, I should point out that I was responding to a post that used MILF. I try to restrain my language on this site :)
Posted: Oct 10, 07 11:44am
Yes, I try to keep Robin in line...but laugh uproariously everytime I see MILF. And I think that term gave rise to cougar...but I don't think I qualify as either!
Posted: Dec 13, 07 5:19pm
Mother-in-law forever?
Posted: Oct 9, 07 10:35am
TMI ... too much information
Posted: Nov 28, 07 7:52am
How about the one "The Daily Show" came up with...
FLILF = First Lady .....
Posted: Nov 28, 07 8:20am
Try keeping track while your teenager is typing it. Whew it is exhausting LOL, I have to ask them What?? :-)) response I get - OH MOM
GTG - Got to go
AFK - Away from keyboard
H/K - Hugs and Kisses
BFF - Best friend forever
A/S/L - Age, sex, location

Don't forget w00t!
Merriam Webster declared it the word of the year.
It's an expression of joy...mostly for gamers....as in
w00t! I just kicked your ass!
Sad to say, I have used it myself :)
Posted: Dec 13, 07 3:47pm
OK, you asked for it. My thinking cap is ON
Posted: Dec 13, 07 3:56pm
OTS out of service as in site will be down
DYSG "Do you speak Geek?"
VPM "Very positive message
OP "Oh PLEASE!"
GreenP "Green person", "environmentalist"
CTA "Conservative tightass".
BHL "Bleeding heart Liberal"
CB "Cry Baby"
SOTL "Single on the loose"
MOAL "Married on a leash"
HPIS "Happy as a pig in slop"
Sorry Robin: I couldn't resist it. And, I could do better. But, it was short notice.

Chill = relax
Sick = good
Down = in agreement with
Kick it = have fun
I dunno I'm drawin' a blank and my 19 year old is "kickin' it" in the waves right now...
This is fun:

Posted: Dec 13, 07 6:09pm
BTW=by the way and the latest trend I have noticed is the addition of the word "right" behind almost anything, as in "I know, right?" and "Yeah, right?" Also, "on the down low" can refer to a generic secret or a married man who has homosexual affairs. BTW, I love having a place where I can learn all this stuff, "right"?
Posted: Dec 14, 07 11:34am
'Round here the official surfer phone sign off is "peace". But this is Fairfax, CA, better known as "Mayberry on Acid"...
Posted: Dec 15, 07 5:32am
wrt (with respect to) your earlier post about:
Chill
Sick
Down
Kick It
I am 51. I grew up in NJ, and in my teens we used all those same words, WITH the same meanings, EXCEPT for 'Kick it' ---- that meant something totally different !!
Just thought I'd pass on that totally worthless piece of info. big smile
Posted: Oct 22, 08 2:32pm
what does this mean: >3
Posted: Oct 25, 08 9:21am
If you meant <3, it's a sideways heart, a real heart can be done with html character code, I'm not sure if it will work on here but here goes: ♥
The heart didn't show up in my preview just now, I have some on my profile page.
Here's a link to make special characters with in HTML
