Okay, I read the title and didn't think it was a question directed to women as much as being specific to hair length on women. I don't think you should feel bound by someone else's "rules" of what is appropriate for you. There are still some places (careers and workplaces were mentioned) where it can make a difference. But I think those places should be living on borrowed time. Try to ignore the societal and marketing pressures to make a choice based on what others might want to see. It really is a decision that needs to come from within you - how does it make you feel? And yes, you should get to change your mind at any time, at any age, the only limit to your choices is the health and growth rate of your locks.

I suffered through the 'poodle cut' and perm at the most awkward age of 15 and would never repeat that style. (My last try at a permanent was in the 70's, when I was adressed as 'Little Annie Fanny' by my dear co-workers; they were right. I grew it out and vowed 'never again' for perms.)
In my early 20's I preferred it short and cut it myself when 'Oliver' came out. I had long hair for a time after that, but I soon went back to a short 'little prince' cut and I have always felt better that way - lighter, freer, happier.
Today it is as long as I can stand and next week when it is cut I will feel GREAT - ready for windy fall weather and walking in the ocean... and still look sexy, I hope...
time for a cut - can't see through it any more!

Hey ladies, long hair goes back many centuries.. Hell the cave men used to really show their love for long hair by dragging them by it. Now that is kinky...

I have fine, broom straight, easily-damaged hair. I wore it long until four years ago when I was 54. No more body perms, no more blood running out of my right arm from holding the curling iron so long.
Mr. C had always been after me to cut it -- he likes a wash-n-go type woman. I thought I'd look older or more "horsey", but I was really ready for a change. It was the right move for me.

I've always preferred ladies with long hair. But I do understand some ladies faces, frames (ie long neck) might call for different styles. So preference isn't always what fits best. In any event, I'm sure you all choose what looks best for yourselves and for that, us men and our eyes thank you.
