The real issue for me is the depth of the monogamous relationship. If it is based on jealousy, insecurity, and someone's need to control my behavior, it would not fly. If it's a real soul bonding, a spiritually robust sexual and creative relationship, then that is awesome.

hmmm... I think it is patently obvious what sets the standard for morality and promiscuity.
Its the same element that sets the parameters of polygamy and prostitution!
Religion, in some form of belief system, is what sets the standards of behavior, deviance, right and wrong for any culture.
Even the Code of Hammurabi used the religion of the day as a basis for what was right and wrong, and what punishment was appropriate.
We, as a species, apparently are trending more to the intellectual (and I use that term loosely) and away from the spiritual. And I must note here that the same culprit applies in that. IMO, nothing robs us of true spirituality any more efficiently than religion.
While copulation is necessary for survival of the species, there are plenty of humans. We have taken sexuality to a whole other place. Sex is not necessary for individual survival, unless we decide it is, whether it is polygamy or monogamy. How much sex contributes to quality of individual life is also a mindset, a decision, made by each for his own reasons or gratification.
More often that not that can be read as:
"Excuse" or "Rationalization"

So, are we no better than the next species? Can we not rise above our hardwiring and rework our thought process to meet the actual needs of the here and now?

I think it depends on the induvial and not just the way you thing but also the way you feel about having sexual pleasures with one person or multiple partners.

I think it's actually the other way around. The mores and morality of a culture form the religion and the concept of god. That's why the god that a culture invents tends to have the same morality that the society does. The problem comes when, let's say some 2000 years later, a culture is still using the same god model with the same tired and outmoded ideas of morality and ethics. Certainly in the US religious 'morality' (now there's an oxymoron if ever there was one) has a hold over many people, to the consternation and the frustration of much of the rest of the Western world.
Willie, I certainly think it's possible to rise above our hardwiring and evolutionary instincts, and I think we do it all the time. Humankind reached that point a long time ago, where we model our own environment so that natural selection is somewhat compromised where we, as a species, is concerned.

Six of one and Half dozen of the other?
Who decides the religion? Its not the masses, that's for sure.
Its the one(s) who by wealth or strength, or some other method of power who decide those things.
If ever there was a modern day example of that, it would the use of the words "Right Wing Evangelicals" vs "Left-Wing Radicals". A lot of what is socially right and wrong, deviant or acceptable, even legal and illegal is at stake between those two extremes.
