It's hard for any of us real guys to live up to a fictional character and there are plenty I have no desire to be like. However, if I were to chose one to emulate I think it would have to be "Jean Luc Picard". Patrick Stewart does a heck of a job portraying a man who has many qualities I admire. He is strong in conviction and character, physically fit, well read, sophisticated but not above grappling in the dirt if he must, yet still has vulnerabilities he must deal with. He is intelligent, confident, and likes classical music, Shakespeare, fine wine, and fencing. He is smooth with the ladies and let's face it, he has a cool British accent.
Characters like 'Jean Luc' are too far and in between in my opinion. Most are, as Whitemanitou says, portrayed as fools who can't cook, can't care for a child, and can't even remember an anniversary or birthday. Those are a few of the annoying stereotypes I see often.
I think we men still have it easier as far as what the media portrays as "normal" or acceptable compared to women. I think there are far more unrealistic standards for women in magazines, TV, and movies.

Hey, Guess what? I don't give a shit how the media portrays guys. I broke the TV habit and now get my news from the computer and newspapers. For entertainment I watch movies and surf TBD. Want to have a discussion? Any topic any time. Want to shoot trap/skeet? want to race go carts/motorcycles/boats, fine. At 70 I've slowed down a lot and now enjoy fishing and sitting on my ass and drinking beer. I live in an RV with a Designer Dog and follow the mild weather. Life is good. I'm looking for a meaningful overnight relationship and what's over the horizon.

I see it this way: We either are portrayed as clueless feminized morons like Raymond. Or complete jerks, or perverts ie: House. There are a few exceptions. The Leads on the CSI's are well written. Men don't get a fair shake in the sitcom world. have you checked out Burn Notice. That show rocks( my opinion) The other comedy I like is Eureka, on the sifi Channel.
