Great! When my dad was there in the early 70's, we had to drive 4 hrs, roundtrip, every day in order to visit him, then we ended up doing most of his care, because they were understaffed! My dad had to die in a nursing home near us because we couldn't manage the trip anymore after 1 1/2 years.

No, but I am very active in the American Legion Auxiliary here in Texas and also a volunteer out at the DFW Natl Cemetary. So I get a LOT of inside information on veterans issues, etc. Thats sad you had to go thru all that. When I learn anything of any import, I try to list the information in here and will continue to do so.

that is great . the Fisher House ,. was there for my family when I went down in Iraq took a 1 1/2 fight to stay alive . we have a new one at the Seattle Va and new one at Fort Lewis .

The Fisher House™ program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House™ Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There is at least one Fisher House™ at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House™ program serves more than 10,000 families, and have made available nearly 2.5 million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House!

In addition to constructing new houses, Fisher House™ Foundation continues to support existing Fisher Houses™ and help individual military families in need. Families and friends of patients at any of the military's hospitals can now receive up-to-the-minute reports on a loved one by going to the patient's own customized web page, thanks to new services provided through CaringBridge. We are also proud to administer and sponsor Scholarships for Military Children, the Hero Miles program, and co-sponsor the Newman's Own Award.

Fisher Houses are places where families of wounded Heroes can stay without any charge when there loves ones are being treated at a VA Hospital. They are generally located at a VA Hospital or very..close by. They are built with contribution donated $$$ from various individuals,corporations and Veterans Organizations

I attended this Dedication. There were 5 Medal of Honor winners there and about a dozen heroes with their DSC,Navy Cross and Air Forces Crosses. T Boone Pickens was a speaker as was the head of VA Affairs in DC. Sev WWII Vets in their uniforms wearing their "fruit salad" Soooo moving to see all these guys in attendance. The house is gorgeous. 21 bedrooms,each with their own bathroom...Large community kitchen with double ovens,sinks,microwaves and toasters. Large laundry room. LR,DR and a TV Room (large flat screen) Each bedroom has a small flat screen TV in them along with a desk/chair and an easy chair Back patio with tables and chairs outside. I think there was about 500 people in attendance.
