I live in Corpus Christi...the last of the "undeveloped" US coast and by darn it is gonna stay that way if our city fathers, who all have special interests, have anything to say about it!

I taught for 22 years, one of my main goals being teaching critical thinking skills. Of course, it goes without saying that basic reading, math, composition, study skills, etc. lay the groundwork for being able to apply the mental process of discernment, analyzing, evaluating, etc.
NCLB destroys any hope of such teaching. It is test-centered and funding dependent. One has to teach to the test and the required record keeping is redundant and meaningless.
Like bilingual education, why would a school district want a child to succeed/be proficient enough to leave the program if it means hundreds of federal dollars will be lost for that one child?
