my grandma used to make: goulash, perogies (potato, sauerkraut), and a stew she called gumpkee (misspelled). My other grandmother used to make potato and bacon soup.

my Gramma made goulash, too

and potatoes fried in lard!!

and pie crusts--flaky and to die for--made with lard

she saved bacon drippings and cooked stuff in them, too

(and she did have a heart attack)

how come stuff Gramma made was always so delicious???

because that is how they cooked in those days. Good to the taste and bad for the body. I remember how G'ma made stuffed cabbage and on each level should she would place slivers of lard between the layers. Also she would place bacon on top of roasts etc. Every Sunday you would walk into her house and it smelled like pure heaven. Oh how I miss her.

Oh my! My mother was born in Budapest. I remember lard! And bacon fat in an old mayo jar in the fridge!

The food did taste better--or maybe my love of Gramma colors those memories
