One idea for you is to consider getting involved with off-hours,part-time work outside the airline. It will be a way to prepare you for the future as well as diverting your focus on your unhappiness at work.

Is that an option for you?

I'm with you Gordon, great to start something on the side to address the job satisfaction issue, as well as additional financial security.

The future!? I'm done..I'm not working a day past 55. In any capacity.. I'm not going to work until I die. Only in America would somebody prepare for another career at age 45..There's more to life. I'm pissed that I even have to go to 55..Afterall there are not too many years of quality life past 55. In my opinion.

I agree with Gordon,

Dig your well before your thirsty my friend. The way the air lines are going I would be surprised if you were secure for another ten years, not to be rude, but if they did lay you off what would you do if that is all you are relying on.

I'm also on the same path as you, Gordon. I am just turning 60 and have owned my own successful software biz now since 1985. i am stepping back from the business, because I'm done with the 9-6. I am NOT interested in Never working again. I saw my dad continue working "Part Time" and he lived until 94 because he kept actively involved in business and politics.

I always believed that for a job to be a CAREER there are 3 things required.

1. You Must LOVE the work

2. You must be GOOD at it.

3. You must be able to make a living on what income it generates.

Years ago I realized that the only way to insure THAT, is to be your own boss. Then only YOU are responsible for the results and only YOU enjoy the rewards. It puts YOU in charge of your own destiny rather than leaving it in the hands of others that are looking out for themselves, NOT YOU!

No one is EVER stuck! People only STICK themselves by believing that they can't change things. Change is sometimes tough and uncertain, but it puts YOU in charge.

I guess that means that I am some sort of control freak, but If I don't control my future who will?

I have got a different problem, and that is with my previous employer. I just recently finished my university, and whilst doing my degree, I was working p/t in a coffee shop. My boss was a typical two-faced person, sweet like honey to you, but behind your back...I told her I needed time off for my exams, obviously that was more important then this job, but she was really nasty. She said of course you can have time off, I understand, and then when I was away, she sent me a txr message asking whether i will be back for friday, to which i replied that no, i only have the exam on tues, so i would be back for wed.,to which she sent me txt saying she found a replacement, dont bother coming back...I did cry over it, however later i realised that it was the best thing she did for me...Now, however, my new employer took her details for references, and me, stupid cow, called her to tell her about it, and she turned to be so nasty, saying all these horrible things, and that she wont give me reference, and that i was a bad worker...Obviously, the jobs i am applying for now are more important, as it means the start of my career, and iam worried sick that she will spoil any chance for me to get a good job...For which she is very well-known.

Is there anything I can do??? Can I tell the new employer that I dont want them to contact her?Will it not just make them to want to find more???

Retirement, I believe Gordon gave you the best career advice. You sound so angry right now and rightfully so. However, it behooves you to be excited about life after the age of 55. If you feel that your life is over in 10 years then it will be.

I do wish you the best and I am sorry to hear that you were wronged by your employer. I believe in karma, they'll get what's coming to them.
