How Many of You Are "Out/Open" At Work?

I'm in Memphis the "Buckle" of the bible belt, most folks want to know if I'm married, how many kids do I have, what neighborhood I live in and what church i attend.

When I knew I was moving to Memphis, I made a concious decision not to lie about my sexual orientation ( except to very elder people).

I learned very quickly who liked me, accepted me, didn't give a damn etc

and who after some weeks kept me at arms length.

It has been so much easier this way, instead of telling lies, lies, and more

lies.

I'm out and have been out all of my adult life.

But then, I've lived in California (LA and SF) most of my life so my being out isn't that big a thing.

Out at both jobs...out to family...if anyone asks I say I have a partner. Been out so long at work they "forget" to tell new people my story since it's such a non issue. That's led to some funny and embarrassing (for them) situations

I miss living on the west coast, where one can see same sex couples holding hands in public.

It's still such an issue here and many of the GLBT folk are themselves homophobic!

I gotta go, gotta get outta Memphis!
