my youngest daughter is going to her first prom tonight, her sister went four years in a row! I never got to go, no girlfriend at the time. What do all of you think about prom? did you go/stay home? if you went was it the memory of a lifetime?

she's beautiful, unique! i love that shade of green with her hair.

prom was not such a huge deal for me. we did not rent limos--we borrowed our parents' cars. and since the drinking age was 18, and our school did not have an after prom event to keep us all safe and hopefully sober all night, we went drinking afterwards. in driver's ed class they always showed the film 'the last prom' during prom week, the one where drinking teens driving badly are tragically killed on prom night.

my daughter had a rough time with prom if only because even tho prom was in may, the girls in her grade started asking all the guys in january. (in the olden days of 1976, we did not ask the boys.) the boy my daughter asked turned her down because his parents' religion forbade him going! she was devastated, and had no one to ask since everyone had been all snatched up already. she eventually asked a gay male friend from another school. and then ended up hanging out with other male friends during the night itself, when she wasnt outside commiserating with her girl friend whose date had ditched her for another girl. such drama!!!

also at her school, kids dont have to have dates to go. some girls went alone, some went with their girlfriends in a group, and there was one lesbian couple.

all in all a very emotional, whirlwind of a night.

Cute couple. I got to go all four years of high school. For us, we didn't get be careful not to drink speech. We got the be careful not to get pregnant speech.

I remember that some of the kids were bummed because their parents only gave them 2 bottles of wine for prom night. I giggle about it now because they were so happy that their kids didn't do drugs. (Little did they know). My mom always told me not to drink on dates because it ruins common sense.

My kids went to a three year high school and had three formal dances a year. So they didn't always have date but would go with a bunch of friends and they always said they had a better time.

Your daughter is beautiful. Love the color of her dress with her hair.

I can't believe how much (gee I sound old) kids spend on proms now. Make up done by a pro, hair done at the salon, jewelry, shoes, cost of limo.

Why in my day! Luckily I had dates that were older and had cars. My parents probably weren't too thrilled. No limos back then for us.

Maybe a thread where we post our prom pictures? Geez I had some funny ones.

that's funny. deb, you have me remembering now. i laid out in the sun all day before my prom! and my date wore a mint green tux. oh, the 70s.

and no, none of us had our hair, nails, make up done professionally. the expense was our clothes and the prom ticket.

I think it was senior prom...yes. Let's get a last minute suntan (wearing a white dress of course). And....the sunburn looked so pretty with my blue eyeshadow.

i got burned too. my face was hot and red all night.

and another girl had the exact same dress! when my daughter got her gown, they kept a list at the place of what girls in which schools had which dress so that wouldnt happen to them.

my daughter is a typical redhead..no tan just burns! lots of freckles though! needless to say she skipped the tanning bed, the teeth whitening too. the dress was a bargain at $230! she does not usually go for hair and makeup but the hair was straightened, it's usually very curly.

In my day prom was in NYC, about an hour away, and the rich kids got hotel rooms. let's just say that the all boys room did not stay that way and not all the girls were seen the following fall.

I'd like to see some of those old prom pics!
