What do you want from TBD?

I’ve briefly lurked on another discussion about reasons for leaving TBD. I know that for me, it’s best to step back from threads such as those since I can get caught up in “the ugly” even faster than the average Joe. But the thread led to further consideration on my part: What do I really expect from being a member of TBD?

Well, I should mention that I’m a member of netfriendships.com — another online community. I now check in once every three months or so. It can be an interesting place…games, casino, forums, videos, virtual gift-giving, classifieds, quizzes to make/quizzes to take, share your tattoo, blogs -- you name it. It’s open to anyone over 18, I believe. Unlike many sites yet much like this one, it’s a site that caters to everyone…single, married, etc. individuals who may be looking for romance and/or just friendship. Like every site, it has its share of nastiness -- members who enjoy stirring up trouble/pompous posts that hurt/members who have multiple ID’s, etc. I will say that the moderators are fairly good at stepping in when new members seem lost or spammers and/or the more threatening/out-of-line became a potential problem. (No Big Brother feel about the moderation, though…)

However, I rarely frequent that site any longer for three reasons:

1. It is SO expansive, that even with my super fast Internet connection, I find the site is sluggish/slow to load. I am an impatient soul.

2. The membership is mainly younger people, and the more mature members seemed to drift away.

3. For me, there isn’t enough balance between interesting/solid discussion and fun but inane chatter.

I’ve been here at TBD a month now. Will I stay? Hard to say at this point, but I think so.

Why would I stay?

--There are some interesting, very nice members here.

--Ask for help or advice in a specific area (cooking, computers, cleaning, etc…) and some very helpful answers will usually follow.

--There are some interesting discussions here. There are intelligent individuals considering thought-provoking topics.

--I often laugh and have a good time while I’m here.

What about TBD leaves me cold?

--There are not enough members who are active/posting.

--New members, if they’re lucky, seem to filter through what I call the “Lounge Portal.” Many don’t seem to understand what’s going on. Heck, the gal who posted about being “Very Lonely” generated a lot of responses…some of those responses in the wrong spot. The original poster has not been back since. Something is wrong with how new members get ‘initiated’ here…

--I was so excited about some of the groups, only to find that they are basically inactive.

--The site is not intuitive, easy to navigate, or well organized in my opinion.

I like TBD because members are 40 and over. We can relate better than with younger folks. AZ, please stay with TBD, you are one of the folks here I enjoy reading.

I love it because people here have an awesome sense of humor and , for the most part, don't get offended and give back what is dished out. When questions are asked or concerns are brought up, they are answered or dealt with in a very straight forward no b.s. manner. Then the b.s. starts to fly around, but is meant in a friendly and, so to say, loving matter that friends share. So to me, this is a place I would like to hang out at.

Oh, do you mean what do I like about TBD? Ah, different question.

What keeps me here is the people I like and my interaction with them. Here's just a few: I like Pru and Spuff's charm and senses of humor. I like Britscot's humility and high level of literacy in his posts. I like Fromz and his overall weirdness and he doesn't seem to get too mad when I jump up and down on him occasionally for being too reactionary. I like akabukowski because she gets me and I, her--no need to explain ourselves to one another. She's also a damn good writer. I like BMichael because he knows way more about cooking than I do and answers my questions. He also is an excellent writer and loves dogs like I do. (I covet his moustache.)

I like almost all the robust debates I find on TBD. I like stepping into the ring and defending my point of view and attacking the weakness or wrongs of someone else's arguments. I don't particularly enjoy being proved wrong, as I must eat crow publically and I have a colossal ego, but I'm always grateful in the end for the correction. I'd rather be right than comfortable or popular.

I really like the writing groups: TWG and Tier2.

I like that the TBD adminisphere seems at least reasonably competent and willing to listen to its members. I was amazed at the number of times BettyRay posted thanks to people for suggestions and promised they would consider same for future software revs.

I dislike the site's front page organization, graphics and choice of elements. Frankly, that page could--and should be--much sexier, cleaner and better organized.

I get really tired of stupid sexually-themed Q&As: "I'm really hot and want to bang everyone I see" or "I have a six foot penis." Thanks for sharing. Now go back to the Jerry Springer Show.

Almost everything that was said.

The if I will stay is based on timing instead.

Forums are typically active in the winter when most are trapped indoors. I am interested in seeing if TBD flourishes in the summer, or if it becomes a seasonal ghost town.

As my profile states, I am here for the party. I keep it light but have reached out for advice a few times.

My life is blessed with friends offline so I have the support I need outside of TBD.

One night I was quite upset about a family situation. I posted and the first one to step up to the plate was Badfrog. I enjoyed his attitude and humor & here he was with great advice and empathy. I respect & admire his ability to come through while being a wonderful husband to his Yvonne and a man who truly enjoys life and lives by my philosophy...

"When life hands you lemons, make lemonade".

Ok, in his case it's froggy juice.

ps...thanks Ken.

pss...Pru ~ words cannot thank you enough.

psss...gatorgal ~ you put the fun in FUNNY.
