Feet Don't Fail Me Now--part 2

Well, I am in training for the Susan Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk--to be held here in Michigan at the end of September. We will be walking 60 miles over the three days. Monday I walked into town for lunch and home again--about 15 miles. That was a little ambitious, but I did it even though I kind of ran out of steam the last couple of miles.

People who know me say I am determined, tenacious--my husband just says I am stubborn, bullheaded!!

I am looking forward to the challenge. Plus I think it will be great to meet the other walkers, men and women, who will be walking in September. As a breast cancer survivor, I am walking for those I know who have survived the disease, as well as those I know who sadly have not survived.

So think of me, fellow tbders, as I train. The vain side of me hopes I will lose a few pounds (and perhaps have a smaller a** as a result). The practical side of me just wants to be in good enough shape to finish!!

Any good tips, stories to share to help will be much appreciated.

I'm in awe of your tenacity and determination to complete the event!

My suggestion is to keep a training log, and don't over do. Muscle soreness is to be expected, but if you have pain that lasts more than a couple of days get it checked out by a physician.

Good luck with your walk! Let us know how you're doing throughout the summer as you prepare.

thanks, bikeatrek. I am not worried about day 1, it's day 2 and day 3 that will be the challenge. I do keep a log of miles walked. So far I have not had any problems. actually walking 6 or 8 miles does not seem like that much now. And I have been experimenting with different types of socks, too

Great motto. The team name.. um ROCKS! .. too.

When I was in High School my track team mates said I looked a bit like Bruce Jenner. Not so much anymore. He's not aged well (IMHO).

Good for you, Roxley! I walked 2 1/2 miles one morning last week and was ready for a nap when I got home. Maybe I should be in training as well.

My Arizona daughter was drawn for a marathon in St. George, Utah, that will be in September so she is training for that--her first marathon.

I have a lot of respect for those who are so dedicated and determined--we'll be cheering you on!

Well Monday of this week I walked 15 miles. Today I got in a 10 mile walk. On the days I don't walk I use my elliptical trainer, my exercise bike and do a few light weights. So far, my feet have not failed me!thanks for the encouragement, kle

Good for you! I'm not sure how old you are, so I hope you're kind to yourself and won't compare yourself adversely to those young whippersnappers that run right past me.

I started walking in earnest about 16 months ago. Went from walking for 30 minutes (s-l-0-w) at lunch to, now, about 40 miles a week. Lost 35 lbs in the process (also cut out most junk food) and have seen my HBP go down and attitude go up.

Having said that -- I don;t think I could walk 60 miles in 3 days. I walk 10 miles on Saturdays and Sundays, and on Monday it's really hard to move. It's not that I don;t WANT to -- it's that my body feels made of super-heavy base minerals. Joint pain. Back pain (big time). I'm 55.

What helps:

Good shoes, fitted by a pro in a running shop

Ibuprofen, taken an hour before walking (and later, if needed)

Pretty places to walk

iPod or some sort of distraction (friend is better)

I walk the farthest when I'm on a quest -- for shells on the beach, or trash to pick up, or pretty leaves, or quartz. Whatever floats your boat.

Good luck! Regardless of whether you meet your goal, your body and psyche will have benefited.
