Very interesting piece in today's NY Times about a business school program to help people re-enter the workforce:

"With a median age of 47 and an average of eight years out of the work force, 41 students — 35 women and 6 men — participated in the first Tuck program, known as Back in Business. Of those, slightly more than half have found high-level and often high-paying work."

along those lines, boomers are retiring at the age of 60 or so-much like previous generations-except we're retiring to start new businesses.

moral of this trend:

keep exercising tbd members! -we've got more work to do evidently....

While I agree with the quote from one graduate, "never apologize for being out of the market," I do think it's important that we stay abreast of current thinking and trends so we arent branding ourselves as out-of-touch with current business issues.

We can all start by not talking about the past so much and start talking about our ideas for the future

I loved the article that you referred to. I am an information junkie when I take on a new mission. I just have to make sure that I dont get side tracked trying to "inform myself".

Its interesting that you made reference to this article because a few years ago a friend of mine did a six week program at Harvard. It was to help him after he was laid off. I was always so very interested in that program and have had a secret dream to attend such a program> (particularly at Harvard). I have imagined a summer in Cambridge, with my kids. renting an apartment and doing a summer Harvard program.

However, I need to further my degree to Masters or Phd to pursue some area of counseling/psychology/human behavior. This is where I need to investigate what area I want to pursue. Right now I work in an elementary school and would like to pursue a specialty area rather than teaching.

Thank you for the great info, I loved it. Youe were right on.

You are right about the past but we are always asked to account for our time when pursuing employment.

It is really important to move forward and start making people face the over 18-54 age group. Talk about "branding". when advertisers hawk their product, they skip us. These people better start paying attention to who pays for these you ones they market To!

Thank you

In April of 2004 I enrolled at American Intercontinental University On-Line. I did my AA, then BFA and Masters one right after another. I have been done for just about a year... I am now 42 yrs old and working for one of the huge auto makers (unfortunately not one of the Big 3, they are not stable enough at the moment), making good money. And I still have 20 yrs till retirement. But when I think about the student loans, oh my.... lol.

In this day and age it was out of self preservation because it was getting to the point that only the college grads were getting the positions I wanted. So I say GO FOR IT!

Congratulations!

I can relate to you-I enrolled at the University of Phoenix in 2003, completed my Bachelors in Business Management then went on to my Masters. I graduated in July 2007-just a month before my 56th birthday. The student loans will be frightful, but I still have enough years left in me to pay them off!
