My day as a volunteer

My company has a new CEO who is very big on teamwork and making the work environment a positive experience. (This is something new for my company, where up until the arrival of this guy we were not allowed to have anything showing over the tops of our cubes, and the breakroom was not a place where anyone hung out, ever.)

Because of this new approach, the company is fielding volunteers for Habitat for Humanity. Today was our first time at the jobsite, and my first experience with HFH. This was a new construction, and today we put the decking down for the first floor. It was a long, tiring day and my arm hurts from pounding big nails, but I feel really good. More co-workers will be working next Saturday, too, but I'm going to be out of town so I'll have to pass.

I do hope we do this again, though.

That makes me all tinglely inside. I love HFH, Carter and ALL the zillions of volunteers.

I like when companies organize and promote it.

Locally we have a Sees Candy Factory and they painted our city's high school. It is a win-win situation.

Home Depot is another company that frequently provide supplies and volunteers in low income neighborhoods to give back.

Good for you (and your company)!

Volunteering is a subject that is very near and dear to me. I’ve been a volunteer for a number of years with a non-profit organization on an on-going basis, and will jump into one-shot events whenever possible.

My company is sponsoring one in a few weeks called Project Warm. We’re going to weatherize windows and doors in homes against the coming winter. Should be fun.

For me, volunteering ultimately became a responsibility. There is great need, unfortunately, in almost all communities. While we are quite generous with cash donations, the real need is often for the hand that can hold the hammer, or spoon the food, or simply hold another hand to give comfort.

Go ahead...nobody’s looking...push that secret button! ;-)

I had the opportunity to volunteer a fair bit last year. And what a pleasure and honour it was!

I worked with adults who were trying to get out of the welfare circle and also with kids who had special needs. Although at the end of the day I would be emotionally and sometimes physically exhausted, my spirits were incredibly high and I was euphoric!

The honour of giving compassion and understanding is something that I believe more people need to do. It is a gift that is infinitely reciprocal.

I often suggest to those who are in a unhappy situation that they reach out to lend a hand to someone who is in need of a kind word or gesture. It's amazing how a simple smile or touch can alleviate one's pain and show them some light.

Another benefit to this, and one I would not have thought of:

Yesterday and today my glutes and back leg muscles were sore, indicating they must have had a good workout. I think it was from sitting and hammering the nails between my legs. I started out hammering from a kneeling position, but my arthritis made it difficult for me to do that for long. Next time I'll know to bring a kneeling pad.

I love to volunteer. Most of my volunteer time is at my church. Currently, I am a Sunday School teacher.

Helping children learn about Jesus is very rewarding.

I also have helped the local group called: Milwaukee Aids Project. They run many

out reaches. MAP has a food pantry for clients

which I have helped stock with food and baby items.
