Is name calling a form of attempted censorship?

When someone calls someone names or belittles them do you think that defines the bullying behavior and do you see bullying behavior as an attempt to censor someone?

The definition of bully that I refer is to be “loudly arrogant and overbearing”.

The definition of censor that I refer is an “adverse critic; faultfinder”.

The reason I ask is that there are so many good discussions on TBD but too frequently an alternative/opposing opinion or response resorts to name-calling and generally belittling comments that I wonder if this does not end up functioning as a form of attempted censorship.

I am new here, so I have not been in discussions yet with this content. I have been on discussion boards for years and I have seen all types of posts.

Everyone has a right to their opinion. It's the context in which someone states it that can determine whether they are bullying someone, or just speaking their mind.

Personally, I enjoy listening to others views...even if I don't agree with them. Name calling, arrogance, and insulting seems very adolescent to me. I choose not to engage those type of discussions. If someone finds fault with me, that is their issue. They gain nothing from me if they are rude and condescending.

Digital Debate is hard as it lacks the human interface so you can use other communication tools to get your point across. 80% of communication is non-verbal.

Written communictaion trumps in law over verbal but not in swaying people.

So, I think people resort to the name calling akin to "shouting" when all else fails.

I'm not defending it, but it certainly is tough to take anyone serious or consider their points when they toss the zinger in that essentially says "me smart you not".

I have faultered from time to time in this regard, but try not to.

Me too! I agree with you and Just J that it depends upon the particular tone and that it is difficult to take those people seriously. Credibility is especially compromised for those who seem to engage in this type of behavior frequently here on TBD particularly with certain topics.

Me too!

Me too! but I have been on the recieving end more often. When that happens I usually leave the thread. So I guess I am being censored.

I suspect this discussion is an attempt to achieve censorship by declaring anything that offends some members as objectionable and in need of removing by management.

Not at all Fromz but thank you for your post. It is simply to discuss what happens when there is actual verbal abuse in the form of mocking and name-calling that occurs here on TBD. Does that result in the person getting a sense of that they should not post anymore and ultimately then does that turn into that person feeling or being censored. Just that; nothing more.

I have seen this happen on political and religious threads. Those folks can be vicious if you don't agree with them. It's unbelievable how much hate is there.

I don't need the drama. I stay away.
